I enjoyed this story. For some reason I am facinated by stories of women from different cultures. Story is not particularly long and is told in two parts -- first from the mother's then the American born daughter. My only criticisms is sometimes the author changes time periods (flashbacks) that at least to me were not clear at first and I found a little confusing -- especially toward the end when some of the characters have very similar names or even the same name! Would recommend it thought as it is an enjoyable, fairly short read and could be the source of good discussion.

This is the story of Ponyboy Curtis. He's a "greaser", going to high school. His parents are both dead, and so he is being raised by his 2 older brothers, Darry and Sodapop. Ponyboy's friends are the other greasers and their rivals are the Socs, the rich, preppy kids from the other side of town. There are a few gang fights in this book, and Ponyboy is really affected by some of the outcomes, especially deaths of some friends. I enjoyed reading this book. Ponyboy was such a cute little narrator. I was fascinated by this sort of gang culture, because I've never read about gangs before. I loved the characters names in this, there were some very different sort of names than I'm normally used to hearing. I really loved that they were reading Gone With The Wind, as that is one of my favorite books.

I don't know where to start in my critique of this book. Reading the jacket and reviews, I had very high expectations, both about the story and the writing and my expectations fell short for both. The plot, if you can call it that, simply wasn't interesting. I didn't find there was any intrigue and the characters were not interesting enough to sustain a plot with no intrigue. The book would have been more interesting if either the big reveal at the end was actually a big reveal and not something the reader has already figured out early on in the book, or if the story were about how the characters adjust, or rebel, against their fate. Intead, it just goes through mundane anectodes about their lives and never culiminates into anything interesting. The other problem I had was the way the story was told. The narrator often alluded to some event and then digressed and came back to it later with lots of "I'll get back to that" type comments. It made for what seemed like a disjointed story with lots of tangents. The most interesting thing about the book is the tangled relationship between the three main characters but I didn't feel the characters were developed very well or that I had any interest or sympathy for them, perhaps because of their condition... Big disappointment. Maybe I missed something, but it bored me from the beginning.

It's a good book to read if you want to know how doctors REALLY talk about their patients. If you'd rather not know, don't read it!

This book splits its time between the past and the present in Provence France--a place I know nothing about. Yet after reading Lawrenson's highly evocative work, I can now picture Provence in my mind's eye very clearly--and I can smell the lavender. This is an incredibly descriptive work and won't appeal to those who like to blow through books because you must take the time to savor the words in order to appreciate the book. It made me want to visit France, and that is one place I said I would never go. This is not really a Romance--I never read Romances. Although the present day story is born of an impetuous romance, there is more suspense to the book than romance. People compare it to "Rebecca," but I think it holds it own.

Love the Lawrence! In this (sorta) pre-quel, you get a look back into the early days of Matt Scudder "on his own." Starting from a late night conversation in the present with one of Matt's "bloody" friends, we step into the world of NYC as a reminiscence...the who, what, and almost why of the evolution of one of my favorite detectives. Matt does favors, but man, does he take those favors seriously. We meet some moral twists and turns, a very real look at the complications of romance, and finally one man's grab at redemption, one day at a time. 4 Stars.

I loved this book! It was very well written; instead of being annoyed by the switch in narrator voices I felt that the technique enhanced the plot and solidified the character development. Now I can finally go see the movie.

Wow, having read slaughterhouse five made this book indefinatly better. The fact that theyre that connected just made me so happy and gave it a more complete feel. The themes were a little more simple than in slaughtergouse five but just as enjoyable. I cant wait to read the third book in the "troutean trilogy" just to see what else is to come. Definatly becoming one of my favorite authors, although i might have to reread Cats cradle.
