Eh, definitely a great premise, but I feel like old Bill Burroughs just doesn't pull it off this time around. Really in the end, the whole thing just seems like a mess. Don't get me wrong -- I don't have a problem with the fact that there is a non-linear storyline, or that almost all of the characters are homosexual drug addicts. It's just that all of those elements are also at the forefront of the second novel of the same trilogy (Place of the Dead Roads), and that instance I feels like he succeeds remarkably in a similarly ambitious experiment. Still, there is some great writing here...Burroughs is naturally talented enough to just blow you away with even the most fragmented ideas and passages. I think if this novel were arranged differently, and had some stuff added and subtracted, we might really have a great work on our hands. It is perhaps worth reading just to see on paper Burroughs' and Brion Gysin's theory on the origins of the white race (that it was an albino hybrid race which mutated out of an explosion or meteor blast in the Gobi desert back in ancient times). ***update, 8/2008: I'm changing my review from two to four stars after I thought about it some more. I was way too harsh in my first response and actually this, like any other Burroughs, is some of the best shit out there. Thanks to all the Goodreads members who popped in to rattle me cage a bit on this one!***

As another reviewer said, "I really wanted to like this book more than I did.." So far, storyline is a bit confusing with 2 similar (? the same ?)characters; writing style is a bit flat. OK, done now. The topic of immigrants from MX being separated from their families back home and their culture is a very timely one and something that very much interests me. I have read other books, though, where I felt this was dealt with more compellingly. (E.g., High Wire Moon)

This might actually be the funniest book I ever read in my life.

Going into it, I knew this was a combination of a retelling of Sleeping Beauty and a Holocaust story, which sounded odd but intriguing. What I didn't know was that most of the story is told through the frame of a present-day grand-daughter to the "Briar Rose" character. After the grandmother's death, she wants to learn more about her enigmatic grandmother who was forever telling the Sleeping Beauty story. I really liked the idea of this framework for telling the story and digging into history, and her visit to Poland was particularly memorable, but I never quite connected to any of the characters. The story is fairly short, and while I don't think it should have been longer, the characters didn't quite come to life in the space they had. Still, I would recommend this to anyone looking for an unusual fairy tale retelling or a Holocaust story told from a bit of a distance. It was hard to put down while I was in the story, but not terribly memorable after the fact.

This book was ok. The heroine was more than annoying.

I've only read snatches of it for school, but they were all good. If neo-liberals actually read this they would realize that Adam Smith is much more complicated than the 'invisible hand' and was actually ambivalent about many aspects of the free market. It's engaging and not at all technical.

A coming-of-age buddy story set during World War II. Part fact, part fiction, the story is fast-moving and engrossing. At times it's darkly humorous, other times just dark, but it's always interesting. I wouldn't call it the best-written thing I've ever read, but it certainly kept me entertained -- and isn't that the main reason we read in the first place?
