Generally I liked it. Story that made me want to keep reading (way too many late nites staying up trying to finishjustonemorechapter..), good writing, well-developed characters that for the most part I cared about. Felt pacing was a little uneven -- many things happening thru first 90% of the book, then a lot gets wrapped up in the last 70 pages or so. Kept wondering throughout the story how these people found fresh water to drink. Lots of mention of warm beer, sodas, etc, but I cant recall an instance when a character turned on a faucet and then was like "oh right! no plumbing!" (Plus this was in the 80s before bottled water was ubiquitous). Also puzzled by how so many physical relationships popped up so quickly. I mean, I've seen Speed and know that people can fall in love under stressful situations, but if I were living in this post-apocalyptic world I'd be focused on finding my next meal, keeping warm, and staying safe.

A charming collection of stories from the life of a 1930's veterinarian in Yorkshire, England. Herriot is as good a writer as he is a vet. Although, I believe I now know far more than I ever wanted to about the uteruses (uteri?) of various farm animals, I do plan to read the entire series. Herriot's prose and genuineness really capture a reader and leave one wanting more.

I read this biography not long after it came out, maybe 1993, and I remember it as being somewhat plodding and workmanlike, but I applaud the author for having a fresh take on Yeltsin that was at odds with the Gorbachev-as-saint mythology that was thick in the air in those years like cheap cologne. I continue to think that Yeltsin was the more intriguing - and arguably more important - figure. I can't seem to find my paperback copy of this one, but hope it will turn up somewhere and I can read it again.
