This one read a little too heavy-handed and rushed. It didn't have the delicate landscape+history handling his books usually have. Rumor has it that the hippie character in the book is based on Ken Kesey, who was a student of Stegner's at Stanford. While reading some sections of the book it seems like Stegner just wanted to get out there how stupid he thought Kesey was. There is, however, one really great extended scene in the book of a sprawling 4th of July party out in the countryside, made all the more sprawling and disorienting because the narrator gets too drunk.

A perfect novel! I loved Crime and Punishment, but I feel The Stranger said the same thing in fewer words, which I feel (perhaps because of Strunk and White) is a virtue. Perfect.

But I am being honest and I am reading this book, and the story is actually kind of cute, except how it is about rich people who are rich with their richness and such. And it is lame, too. But it is an easy read and it goes well with cigarettes, suntan oil, and diet coke.

An entertaining read about one of Australia's cricket legends. All I knew about O'Keeffe was his laugh and that I enjoyed his funny commentary on the ABC radio broadcasts so it was interesting to get a look inside the mans head. It reads at times like he is commentating but I think this only adds to the overall charm of the book.

Ok, in one word: Wow!. I mean this is worse and better than a ghost story. I never saw the ending coming, yet it all made sense at the end. Maybe not a happy ending, but possibly a just ending. I don't want to give anything else away, because that would take away from the immediacy of the end of the book. You have to travel through the entire book to get to the end. You have to read all of the beginning and middle to understand the ending. But I have to say that Audrey Niffenegger has taken her place along with Alice Hoffman in making the modern faerie tale, the old ones before the Grimms Brothers and Disney got ahold of them. This story just doesn't let you go, it lingers even after you've put it down for the night. And then..POW. knocks you on your butt and leaves you gasping for air. So all hail Aubrey Niffenegger, though I'd never want to meet her in a dark alley late at night.
