When the protagonist starts whining about not having a choice because he is too much of a coward to take the choice he doesn't like, it's not going to bode well for my enjoyment of the book. I only kept reading it because I thought the action or suspense would pick up, but it never did. Then BAM! Book's over. This is not a good start for my reacquaintance with Grisham.

More than just a slice of life. It's a story of a particular time and people. Mr. Russell didn't shy away from common occurances of the time and it wasn't always comfortable to read these parts of our history. The spirit of people who don't give up and move toward a better life is inspiring.

I'm really impressed with Rowling. I've been feeling very angry lately, and I think it's coming from the beginning quarter of this book! Harry's been suffering a lot of injustice and unfair treatment and he's getting angrier and angrier, and so am I! Looking forward at more mysteries revealed. Another great addition to the series. Things are definintely speeding up and I'm very curious where the last book goes.

This book moved me more than I expected. Reading his articles on modern atrocities reminded me what a thin facade a "civilized culture" is. It made me want to shed my insecurities and enjoy life more, because it could be taken in a moment. I read somewhere that the winner of a war is always the one willing to go to the lowest moral level. The stories in this book bear that theory out.

Elizabeth McCraken’s baby dies in the ninth month of pregnancy and this is her story rolled out backwards for her readers, from the opening pages when she shares that her precious son dies and a second child is born alive and healthy. Knowing from the start that Elizabeth and her husband will have this second child does nothing to ease the reader through the savage grief of that dreadful day when their child is stillborn. Elizabeth’s words “This is the happiest story in the world with the saddest ending,” says it all.
