This was my first Noman Mailer book, and I wasn't aware of the length before I started to read. I mean, I knew it was a thick book, but not over 1000 pages. The journalistic style at the inner workings of a trial that ripped the state of Utah and the rest of the country apart were surprisingly an easy read. Mailer does a great job of humanizing those involved with this case. It left me reconsidering my point of view on capital punishment.Even though it took me forever to read the book, I recommend it to anyone who is ready for read that forces you to question your beliefs.

I think this is a really powerful novel, and I wish this stupid rating system weren't so limited. I gave it three stars because it's not one of my favorites, maybe not destined to be a classic. But it's still pretty d*mn good. And it's hillariously funny to boot. This is one of those novels where you start out laughing, but by the end, are so profoundly moved that tears seem like a trite response.

This book starts with a new story line and has another hero and heroine than the first two books. I will confess this is my favorite book in this series so far. It's intriguing, suspenseful and best of all: the romance between Rhys and Verity is very enjoyable and isn't as angsty as the romance was in the previous books. I only now realised how the angst in the first two books influenced my overall enjoyment of the books. In Mark of the Rose I didn't have to worry so much about the romance and this made me lose myself in the rest of the story more easily. The setting and world building are wonderful and I really loved the action storyline, which is full of intrigue and action. Some plot turns were a bit obvious in my opinion, but not so much as to annoy me. I'm looking forward to the next book which has the conclusion of this storyline and I think I'll even reread the first two books now that I know how the romance plays out and I can concentrate on the rest of the story more easily.
