A lot of criticism aimed at this book, and maybe not up to the same par as Life of Pi. Still worth adding to the canon of art about the Holocaust or art that tries to understand any form of suffering, beast or man.

Very interesting take on the development of civilizations relative to geographical and other variables. Definitely NOT a 'beach book.'

I read this and kept asking myself over and over: "Why am I reading this again?" I guess I'll write this one off as Twilight withdraw, call myself a masochist, and move on. 4/10

Ok the cast: one bored housewife, one timid husband, one impotent young man, and one gorgeous young girl. A quick recap... bored housewife falls in love with gorgeous young girl but then finds out that she is seeing an impotent young man while the bored housewife's timid husband gets suspicious over everybody seeing everybody so he gets seen too and everyone is lying and scheming and then tears, threats of suicide pacts and general goofiness abounds. Tanizaki wrote this book in the 1920's about a lesbian relationship. A bit like Fatal Attraction meets Brokeback Mountain meets Romeo & Juliet. Considering the time he wrote it, this was a pretty radical story that is still relevant today. It doesn't feel dated at all. A good book. Tanizaki understood beauty... that comes through clearly in his writing. He made me really want to lay my eyes on that one gorgeous young girl. I think she could have turned me into a lesbian too.

"I have tried my best to eliminate or to destroy the beginning and the end of my novels. The Inner Side of the Wind, for example, has two beginnings. You start reading this book from the side you want. In Dictionary of the Khazars you can start with whatever story you want. But writing it, you have to keep in mind that every entry has to be read before and after every other entry in the book. I managed to avoid, at least until now, the old way of reading, which means reading from the classical beginning to the classical end." Essentially three cross-referenced encyclopedias about the Khazars' search for a greater religion (Orthodox Christianity, Islam and Judaism), Pavic's novel is a interesting attempt at a new form. Incidentally, the Khazars are the only nation known to have converted en masse to Judaism.

Brothers book, but with an interest in fantasy I had to check it out. It is more of a novelty, and not really worth all the effort. If you've played D&D you most likely helped write this book.

I can't get enough of questions I never thought to ask and intelligent answers to those questions. What affects the color of earwax? How much does my head weigh? Why do pineapples have spines? These are great questions and had I not read this book, I would have never thought to ask these wonderful questions.

I really liked this book, but it wasn't an easy read for me. I had a little trouble following some bits, and since it is involved very heavily in channel sailing and intrigue, that isn't very surprizing. Still I found so much of it fascinating I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
