Fun adventure story. I liked the characters and I think this series was set up well. I can't wait to read the rest!

What a creative debut novel!. It shines a spotlight on the foster care system and how it is so easy for children to turn inward and not communicate, but how it is so important for someone to take the time to find what it is that really excites them. Part of the book showcases Victoria at age 18 and beyond as she is emanicipated from the system and struggles to find her way with no guidance and no family support. The other part is a 10 year old Victoria who realizes that she is placed with the person who offers her a last chance before landing in group homes until emanicipation with no hope of adoption and finding a family. Elizabeth is the perfect placement, but Elizabeth wants desparately Victoria to fit within her larger family and Victoria wants only Elizabeth. Even though they may not make the perfect family, Elizabeth instills within Victoria the love for flowers and a passion for the language of flowers and literally becomes part of who she is and what she can and will do and thus ultimately becomes the key factor in her own personal struggle to find self-worth and acceptance.

So, look, I really don't want to overstate my case here--But this is clearly one of the best books of the last decade.

Enjoyed this immensely! Going to start Hunger as soon as my 15 year old gives me back my nook, cause he is devouring this book too :-)

I think the book is a beautiful story of the loss and love of this family and her daughter. However I had to stop readimg every detail ans just get the main ideas after half way through the book. I became paranoid watching every move my kids made to seeif they had some symptoms of anything. Since readimg the book I kniw of two families with children diagnosed with the same illness. The book both reminded me of the fact the my children are precious and that I get freaked outway too easily!!

Having read many, many books about China by Chinese citizens, former citizens, ex-pats, and gifted travel writers (Colin Thubron was divine, Paul Theroux was dreadful) and westernised Chinese, this was essentially "China Lite". This is NOT the book to read if you want to know about the history of China, the stories of the people of China, the soul of China. This is not the book to read if you want a play by play of a journey through China with maps and descriptions. The author is not so much a "travel writer" as a "travelling writer" and, as such, this is an amusing, visceral reaction of an articulate man to a bewildering nation with a multitude of contradictions and cultural mores. A series of vignettes, if you will. This is no in-depth meditation on China, her past and future, and, as the title indicates, the author remains as mystified with China at the end of his trip as he was at the beginning, but with some good travel stories. It should be noted that at no time did the author indicate he was going to demystify China and his bewilderment and befuddlement are quite apparent. A light read, nicely written and good fun. And, while I was aware of the spitting tendencies in China, he really did make that sound quite horrifying.

I was reluctant to read another book about the Holocaust so soon after having read The Invisible Bridge. I am so glad I did not set this book aside for later. Sarah's Key is an amazing and yes, heartbreaking story. I read this book in 24 hours and probably would have read it faster if I didn't actually have commitments to attend to, it's difficult to put down. While this is a story of fiction the background and the events of the story are all true. And like so many of the characters in the book, I was not aware that such austerities occurred in France by French Police. It is such a heartbreaking story to hear how these families were treated. Following Sarah through her life through her own eyes as well as Julia's is a thrilling almost desperate journey to discover the truth of her life. An excellent read.

Have you ever felt an author had stolen your thoughts and feelings and put them in a book? I felt that way through this entire book.
