While I was very interested in reading about the early life of Hemmingway the book itself was just a bit to tedious with the conversations.

I believe Kersten Hamilton is filling a void left by Diana Wynne Jones--with her own unique voice and point of view, of course. Many of the things I love about DWJ's books I find here: a large cast of characters, a sense of mutual love and affection among the characters, an unexpectedness of plot, joyful and surprising magic, and a sense of barely controlled chaos which makes her books such a fun rollercoaster to read. If you haven't read Tyger Tyger yet, move it to the top of your to-read pile so you'll be ready for book 2 when it comes out.

A very practical and biblical look at any relationship--not just boyfriend/girlfriend relationship.

My son and I both love the Harry Potter books. I started reading them when she was only up to the third book, and two summers ago my son read them all for the first time. We are both looking forward to book seven and how she will end this beloved series.

Really great historical fiction. I highly recommend it. Follows the story of a young Hawaiian girl who is quarantined from her family when she develops leprosy. "Alan Brennert draws on historical accounts of Kalaupapa and weaves in traditional Hawaiian stories and customs.... Moloka'i is the story of people who had much taken from them but also gained an unexpected new family and community in the process."--Chicago Tribune-

Amazing world building and action scenes. More of a 4 and a half star book for me. Some parts felt like a lot of info dump, though.

I saw a TV show once where a character, when asked what she would do on her last day of earth, replied that she "would lay in the sun, drink a glass of wine, and read some Borges." I don't know exactly what that means, but I like Borges' imaginative and very confident writing style. Like he's got everything figured out, but relays little hints to us in the form of sentences, paragraphs. Yes. Yay for Borges.

The stories in this book are not meant for a Halloween night by the campfire for children. These stories actually reflect 25 years of study by the late Dr. Grant, who held a doctorate in American Studies from the University of Hawai'i and was a teacher at Hawai'i Tokai International College. No urban legends here about taking pork over the Pali or disasters following removal of lava from the islands (true stories, but, over time exaggerated.) Even if you don't believe in the supernatural, you'll be hardpressed to disprove the encounters detailed in this book. Better to sit back and enjoy the stories of ancestral bones in mysterious caves, a Kapahulu haunting, legends of the fire goddess Pele, and the curse of Aloha Stadium. You'll soon experience the deeper meaning of "chicken skin."

I'm not usually the type to read a book like this. I think that a lot of people may read books that are on the lighter side, and make you escape the harsh reality of this world. Okay, I'll admit that I'm one of those people, but this time I tried to read something that could really happen any day. I remember having a discussion about cyberterrorism with a friend only a few days before I started this book. It really frightened me to think that something like this could happen. In a world where we worry about nuclear attacks, the thing that may just get us is something that hides in plain sight. In our computers. America-and many other countries-have become much to dependent on machines, if anything were to happen to our technology, well, we'd be screwed. After reading this book I've gained a big respect for people who specialize in things like this. It's not an easy job, it involves a lot of numbers, codes, and hours of work. I had an urge to put down the book after reading the first page, uh, a little. . . inappropriate maybe? Excluding some slight adult material, this book was good, not something I would've thought I could enjoy. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself involved in the story. I'd recommend this to people interested in technology and cyberterrorism, or anyone who just has a natural curiosity.
