The mix of modern day story and folk tales is very interesting. An ambitious style that worked better in some parts than others. The refusal to identify places didn't work well for me. I think Téa Obreht was writing about Serbia, which is where she grew up, but trying to say that the war experience is universal. Maybe I have identified too strongly with Bosnia after visiting Sarajevo a few years ago but it doesn't seem to me fair to equate Serbia and Bosnia during the Balkan war.

This book was very good but also very sad. This is from the Epilogue, Page 212; "...on August 12,1898, Hawaii was finally and officially annexed to the United States. The Hawaiian national anthem was played for the final time, and then the Hawaiian flag was removed from its proud spot atop Iolani Palace, with the American flag raised in its place. Hawaii would never be independent again, and all of her people wept that day."

In this fifth entry in the Scudder series, Matt is hired by high-class hooker Kim Danniken. She is determined to leave the life, and, fearing her pimp Chance may try to stop her, she figures she may need Scudder's help. Things seem to be going well at first, but then somebody ends up dead, and Scudder realizes he has a much more complicated job on his hands. The plot is interesting, with a few twists and turns, some memorable characters (“Danny Boy” Bell, the black albino dwarf tipster; Chance the elegantly dressed pimp, connoisseur of African masks; Donna Campion, half-hearted hooker and accomplished poet), and more than a few exciting and atmospheric scenes. But the heart of the book—and the reason why I love it—lies elsewhere. It is filled with countless examples of two different kinds of small stories: the ones the newspapers tell its readers about sudden death in the city and the ones AA members tell each other about the ways alcohol has damaged their lives. You see, alcohol is trying to kill Matt Scudder, and maybe New York City is trying to kill him too, and it is through the contemplation of both kinds of stories that Matt comes closer to confronting his demons and getting on with what is left of his life. This is not only the finest Scudder so far, but a landmark and milestone of the hard-boiled genre. It is of course a genre forever tied to the magic of particular cities, but this book is the only one I know that consciously uses the city's stories, the tales of the dead and the dying, as a sort of urban necromancy, a way of calling the hero forward, out of the depths of his city, squinting in pain toward the New York light.

This book was such an enjoyable read. It was interesting to learn about about the Chinese culture and their beliefs of the afterlife and rituals. Peony frustrated me a little in her stubbornness...there were many "if only" moments, but then the book wouldn't be the same. Great read!

After watching the movie Shattered Glass, I picked up the book thinking that they're usually better than the movies they inspire. Right up front, Glass says that it's not a memoir, not meant to be read as anything based in reality. But truth be told, the story seems to follow his own life pretty closely. So possibly the only reason I enjoyed it so much was because I could actually see Hayden Christensen's whiny drooling mugging face mouthing lines from the book. The writing's not too bad. A little too crisp sometimes for my own taste, but we all know how much I love the ornate wordiness of eastern romantics. But it's a fair look into the devolving mind of a journalist whose desire to impress quickly overwhelms his obligation to the truth. And much like when I was reading A Million Little Pieces> I could honestly empathize with many of his sentiments. I could see myself falling into those traps. But that's why I studied literature, not journalism.
