My 19-month-old son is obsessed with this book right now. I read it to him no less than 12 times yesterday (we just got it from the library yesterday), and he has 'read' it on his own at least as many times since. Little boys and their trains, who knew?

Milo Moon by, Derek Haines Derek Haines book, Milo Moon, is a story that has a ring of familiarity. It touches on the sci-fi with a hint of political suspense. The author’s strength is the fun he has creating his characters. Any reader will enjoy the adventures of Milo and Mary, which is the compelling reason to finish the book. The prose and dialogue are simple which makes for an easy read. There are a few occurrences which automatically categorize the book for adults. Without these scenes Milo Moon could have been enjoyed by young adults, obviously, not the author’s choice for this story. I recommend Milo Moon for the sci-fi audience. I could see a fan wondering what Milo and Mary would look like on the big screen. Book review by Mary Crocco [email protected]

It took me awhile to read this, and its fairly short. The beginning was okay. I like the way that Samson and Delilah meet. I was laughing at the way the meeting took place and who he thought she was. It was different. Then, I started getting bored and skimming. First, when Samson called her vagina a 'lush canopy' and her breasts Asia and Europe, or somthing. Okay, okay, I laughed at that part. Her nipples were rock hard mountain peaks, for gosh sakes! Certain phrases caught my eye that I normally would have been able to skim over, but for some reason they stuck in my brain and bothered me. One part was, "He knew the city like his back pocket." Huh? You mean, like the back of his hand? Or, there is a part where Delilah cuts her hand on a knife in the kitchen and Samson yells to Amaury, "Get the bandaids! They're in the drawer next to the stove." I never knew people kept first aid kits next to the silverware. So, a few things bothered me, and I just couldn't get into the story. The characters were immature, and though the premise of a male vamp with erectile dysfunction was funny, it just wasn't conducive to a sexy paranormal romance. I think I've been spoiled by Bones and Barrons. Which is completely unfair, but there you go.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver is a modern classic that has so many components rolled into one book: historical fiction, memoir, political statement. The story follows a family from Georgia that moves to the Congo as missionaries in the 1960s. The move was decided by Nathan, the father, who believes God chose him to save the heathens abroad. He is a zealous Southern Baptist preacher whose beliefs and actions often contradict mainstream Christianity. The narrative, however, is told by the five women in the family; the mother, Orleanna, introduces each section of the book with a chapter reflecting on life in Africa after decades have passed, while the four daughters--Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May--alternate chapters to tell the story as it was happening. The 1960s brought political upheaval to the region as Belgium granted independence to the Congo (thus becoming Zaire), causing wars, assassinations, and cover-ups by the UN. The author uses her characters to showcase different reactions to the changes taking place in the Congo. They see the changes through the eyes of an American trying to adjust to a new lifestyle, but they also learn the complexities and customs of the natives and develop a new perspective. Kingsolver does an amazing job displaying contradicting viewpoints and illustrating many sides of the story. She intricately develops five very different characters, each described so specifically that the reader feels as though (s)he can predict their thoughts and reactions. The constant change in perspective is refreshing, because the narrative is continuous. I finished this book fulfilled, yet wanting to know more about the history and environment in which the story was set.

This book is now out of print, which is a shame. It was written by a Lexington man, about a Lexington Legend! It's such an interesting but sad story. Even if you are not interested in Belle (what's WRONG with you?) the history and old pictures of Lexington is really cool!
