Could not tell you which edition(s) I have read or exactly when. Possibly when it first came out in paperback, but also could have been hardcover. The phrase, "the scales fell from my eyes" comes to mind when thinking about this novel. Exciting, different, ground-breaking; these are over-worked and sometimes trite words used to describe things. "Neuromancer" is all of them and more. I couldn't remember if "Max Headroom" the US ad campaign and short-lived TV series was coincident or later than this book (it was after), but the gritty, electronic future is definitely a borrowed theme. Yes, everyone will say how William Gibson created "cyberpunk" (and from a genre POV they are correct), but I consider it more like how Issac Asimov used ""he Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" to craft his (originally serialized) novels, "Foundation", "Foundation and Empire", and "Second Foundation". (This series was fleshed out much, much later to several more books and tied into his "Robot" series.) Gibson took observations of the real world, past developments and their social impact, and imagined how they might continue into a future. Sounds simple and obvious, but his genius was in recognizing that a counter-culture often develops before anyone in the "normal world" knows of things except the "early adopters". Although such a "creation" is not unique, Gibson did it first in our place and time. (Think of older authors who created notable characters or sub-genres of literature that even today are recognized and beloved.) The true test of an author is how he proceeds from a singular accomplishment: Gibson has been a remarkable author and this is his first full-length tale. Read it and enjoy!
