One of the best books I read in college, with a depth and inventiveness that I didn't find in _Invisible Cities_ or other Calvino. Steps clearly out of the Borgesian universe into something distinctive. The narrative's enclosure in a poem (see chapter titles) is a beautiful feat.

I can't give this book a rating because it wouldn't be fair. I am very grateful to the author for sending me a signed copy. I was not able however to get into the book. I read half and couldn't really get grabbed by the story line. I was confused a lot of the time. I found the Xen very interesting and kept reading to find out what would happen to Jeremy. I just couldn't keep up with Ann and what was happening with her project at work, or the scandle that was going on. This was a bit over my head for me. :/

Before Lucille Ball became the first lady of television in 1951, she had made 75 motion pictures in 18 years. She traded her moniker of RKO's Queen of the Bs for TV's Queen of Comedy. Between 1954 and 1985, she made just eight more films. This overview of Ball's film career highlights each movie with its cast and credits; a lengthy synopsis; and behind-the-scenes notes about the production and its critical reception. Visually stunning and beautifully designed, this book is printed on thick, glossy paper and boasts large, crisp (and seldom seen) photos from each film. Some of De La Hoz's backstories are fascinating (Frank Sinatra originally wanted her to play his mother in The Manchurian Candidate before Angela Lansbury was cast; Ball outsmarted Columbia chief Harry Cohen by agreeing to star in 1951's The Magic Carpet: she kept her pregnancy a secret, pocketed $85,000 for one week's work and fulfilled her contract). While Ball excelled in comedies (The Facts of Life; Fancy Pants; The Long, Long Trailer; Yours, Mine and Ours), this book may point fans toward Ball's excellent but atypical work in such dramas as The Dark Corner; Lured; and Five Came Back

Coming late to Dickens, I really enjoyed this novel about redemption and resurrection and intend to read more of his works, as this was so far only my second encounter with the author. Like other readers, I gave it four stars - I found some sentences often difficult and clunky, bumping along like an old tumbril. And some of the coincidences were a bit contrived, it's true, like when Sydney Carton just happens to show up at the Deforges' wine shop when Barsad is there doing his dirty work. But still -- there is something homey and comforting in his writing (I particularly love the descriptions of home and hearth: though not much happens, Dickens makes it sound so cozy). In this novel, as well as many of my favorites, I love the duality and ambivalence at play. After all, those are the things that characterize all of our lives. During these "best of times, worst of times" (mainly, the worst) that make up our US presidential election year, I found this question for discussion at the back of my edition made me chuckle and immediately, one person sprang to mind, which, while true, proved really scary: Dickens uses the callousness and cruelty of the marquis to represent the injustice of the French aristocracy system. Are there any contemporary political or business figures that you think compare with the marquis?

Normally he has Alan Gregory speak in first person, but in this book he doesn't. The female character, Kirsten Long and the other names she uses, narrates her part of the story in first person and the rest is spoken by the author. However, on page 41 he forgets his formula and writes a paragraph in first person from Alan. I'm surprised his editor didn't catch that. Oops! Definitely a sub-par performance from White. The plot was believable but the characters weren't. Kirsten Long was just silly. No way would she ever be believable as an assistant District Attorney. Also, because of her foolish decision to call her best friend, against all advice, she brought everything on herself. And as far as I can tell, this is the first book where White starts having his characters turn their sentences into a question instead of a statement. For instance: "I was actually considering going to see that woman whose husband died at Columbine High School. The teacher who died in the shooting there? I've been thinking maybe his wife could teach me something that would help me move on." He does that throughout the entire book and every book he's written thereafter; I have no idea why, but if he thinks he's making his characters hip and edgy, he's sadly mistaken.

I want to say right up front that I did enjoy this book. However. My thought is that this book is going to appeal to a couple of select groups – not that there is anything wrong with that – most books appeal to select groups, right? I think that if you like historical fiction, you’ll love it. The younger end of the YA group will also enjoy it and it is ‘safe’ for them to read. There’s a minor bit of violence here and there, but most things are alluded to instead of right in your face. It reminds me a bit of the old books like Little Women or Betsy and Tacey or even Eight Cousins, but with a little more oomph. That being said, let’s carry on. On the Volcano is set in the 1870’s. What a great period in history! There were still unsettled areas in the United States and people brave enough to go off on their own got to live in beautiful, peaceful areas. Katie MacDonald is fifteen years old and has never strayed from home. She lives on the edge of a volcano in the forest with her father. Her mother died when she was young and she’s only ever seen two people. Can you imagine being fifteen and only having ever seen two people besides your dad?! One is a family friend, Dan and the other is a visiting nurse, Lorraine. Katie has lots of adventures in just 288 pages and ofcourse she eventually meets some people, including a young man named Adam Summerfield. The story is sweet and nice and does indeed show what life must have been like in the 1870’s. I will say that at times it struck me as a YA harlequin romance, but maybe that’s just me. There are a couple of things that bothered me about this one: 1) Lorraine stays for months at a time. We are told there are two bedrooms – Father’s and Katie’s. Where the heck does Lorraine sleep? At one point her father refers to ‘our bed’. Wouldn’t a young girl question that? Won’t readers question that? I was a bit confused and went back to see if I had missed something. Then I decided that Father and Lorraine were sharing the room and no one was going to mention it. 2) In over fifteen years no one at all but Lorraine and Dan ever found the cabin, even accidentally? But suddenly several people find them and/or the cabin? If people were hunting and gathering, it seems that eventually someone would have run into them. 3) At times Katie seemed very young in the way she talked and thought. I’m putting this down to the fact that she must have been very sheltered, not seeing anyone or going anywhere. However, there are times that she seems very mature and knowledgeable, so I was confused. Sometimes she seemed to act like an adult and sometimes like a little girl. I decided to chalk it up to the fact that she is so sheltered yet knows how to survive in the wilderness. I do think that this is a worthwhile read, the historical information is good and it does take you back to a simpler, quieter time.

Educational and entertaining read communicating one view of Buddhism. A bit too didactic at times.
