I wanted to like this more than I did, which is not to say that I didn't thoroughly enjoy it. I did devour this is two days, after all. It's just... I think my expectations were too high. I kept looking for something more. Perhaps this 'more' will find its way into subsequent books, the release of which I eagerly anticipate. I think they worried that my grandfather would infect me with some incurable dreaminess from which I'd never recover - that these fantasies were somehow inoculating me against more practical ambitions - so one day my mother sat me down and explained that I couldn't become an explorer because everything in the world had already been discovered. I'd been born in the wrong century, and I felt cheated. Particularly around the beginning, I was definitely aware of the sort of haunted writing that also accompanies the author's charming documentary-style videos on YouTube. There's a great lilting quality to it. I don't hear that quality so much as the story progresses, but it could be an acclimation thing. And the photographs, of course, are a brilliant inclusion. Miss Peregrine felt a bit like a caricature, though the children - at once younger and older than expected - were all perfectly matched to their ripened wisdom and maturity in the confines of perpetual youth. However, I felt the protagonist, Jacob, wavered too much as I often had to remind myself that he was only 16 years old while other times he seemed almost tween-ish. Everything else in the story... hollows, wights, ymbrynes, loops scattered throughout time that remind me of a shifting apollonian gasket... I want more! It's a great start to a fun mythos that I can't wait to explore further. Prediction time! Jacob's dad, being an ornithologist, will be useful with the ymbrynes in future books. He may also find a subject for a book that he actually finishes, marketing it as fiction.

** spoiler alert ** Read this to switch it up a bit from the vampire genre I usually like to read. The other book I read from Lisa Gardner was really good so I didn't expect this one to disappoint either. It was very exciting up until the end. She presented some great twist but I think went a little too far in the conclusion. Didn't really like the ending as much as I anticipated but it still was a good book.

some good points...but overall, horrible advice for parents of mixed kids. DO NOT use as a resource!

This is a really well written book. The reason I only give it 3 stars is because I just didn't care about any of the characters. That said, I believe this was the authors intention. It's a stylized novel which just isn't really my cup of tea but as an exercise in writing it's very impressive. The last sentence is nothing short of bone chilling.

As always, John Sandford writes an intriguing book. Even though the subject matter is very disturbing, it was difficult to put the book down.

Even though this was not an edge of your seat type of mystery, I really enjoyed this book. Something about Jance's "Beaumont" books, and the way she writes in this characters voice, that make them fun to read, even without near misses with serial killers.

At just 200 pages long, I managed to finish both the first and second stories in one day. I love this series. But Tad is crap. Who cares if Jesse is a ghost. You two are MADE for each other. The sexual tention kills me. LOL. Cant wait to start book number 3 right now :D

Let me level with you: initially, this book weirded me out. I received it as a gift in the mail via Amazon after a dinner I’d spent with a colleague 30 years older than me. We’d consumed a bit of wine, and the conversation had shifted to the Now. Said colleague, I know, has enjoyed his fair share of mind-altering substances. I respect Huxley, and I'm sure the doors of perception, can, under such circumstances, open. I always figured, though, that what was brought back would be incomprehensible to me. My first impression was that Ram Dass had fried his brain in the ‘60s. However, I kept reading. Eventually, I grew to appreciate his message: be here now. In the end it was no more sinister than that --- and it was that same reminder presented in a few hundred pages with convenient illustrations for those orbiting the moon while reading. And after I dealt with the weirdness of the visuals, I got into it. Well worth reading.
