My favorite Shirley Jackson book because of its mysterious nature and character development. For me, Natalie Waite was very easy to relate to in many ways, until the appearance of Toni and the downward spiral. Definitely not as creepy or scary as The Haunting of Hill House, but a great read for the amount of detail and psychological suspense. While I started my senior thesis reading The Haunting of Hill House, I eventually would up reading almost all of Shirley Jackson and settled on writing about just this one novel. My thesis investigating the women's roles of the time and the hero cycle. It makes me sad that I can't remember most of what I wrote, but it was about 8 years ago! I do remember though that almost none of the critical writing on the book discussing the rape. My cover does not look like this at all! This cover is the perfect cover for this book, whereas my cover sucks. It has a picture of a blond frightened looking girl with a noose. When discussing girl names, it was no accident that Natalie Wait's name made it on the list. Of course, Natalie Portman helped it become our final choice.

This third book in the series a little under the rest of the series in my opinion. The book isnt as well written as its predececors. It seems to me that James patterson ran out of adventures and put in not as exiting mini-adventures like speaking against global warming. The main charactor went from fighting bad guys to speaking publicaly about global warming , an awkward change in my opinion. Over all this book was just not as the ones before it.

While this started off a bit slow for me, once I had the first few chapters I found myself delaying what I should have been doing just to read more. It captures the tension of the time and gives voices not as often heard. It explores complex relationships and the affect they have on those involved. Race relations and cultural issues aside, Stockett creates some lovely characters with depth, emotions and their own experiences that truly add to the story. The ending left me wanting to find out more about the characters, some sort of true resolution, though each character's tale was tied up in its own way. So, that might be my crazy curiousity getting the better of me and a testament to wonderful story telling.

Read first 3 chapters, which dealt with the how the mind & body should concentrate and utilized effectively. Good comparisons, experiments and explanations. From Chapter 4th, it's all tennis which didn't make much sense to me to read.

This book was odd but interesting. I enjoy David Gran's writing quite a bit and he has a knack for finding odd but relatable - in a REALLY far out sort of way - to write about. The story I found the most interesting was the one that opened the book, about a Sherlock Holmes scholar who ends up becoming obsessed about a few particular missing manuscripts and then dies under strange circumstances. My one complaint is that the book is billed as "true crime" even though not all of the writing focuses on crime (or obsession as the subtitle would have you believe). There are a dozen pages or so that go on about giant squids. Interesting, I guess, but not true crime. The book is much better approached as a collection of David Gran essays rather than having much to do with one another.

Interesting premise, although I do feel like the clone topic is not as dramatic now as when it was first introduced to the public... I found the narrator's voice annoying and repetative. Still, I was enteratined and somewhat thought provoking in terms of what is our purpose in life, what makes us human, what is a successful and well-lived life.

I did not particularly enjoy the book, Nickel and Dime. To me, this book was not a particularly interesting read. The author spends most of the book discussing how grueling and painful it is to be part of the working class here in America. Please do not get me wrong, from reading this I have gained a great respect for people who work in the “blue collar” field. However, I believe the author is only telling part of the story. Most people in the working class world are hardworking individuals, yet there are many illegal immigrants in this country who also work in these positions who are willing to except nearly any job at nearly any wage. These workers can make it very difficult for legal Americans to find a decent job at a decent wage. The author never really addressed these issue or the pain and emotion these legal citizens must endure. If the author wasn’t able to eat or pay rent, she still had back-up money she could turn to. Most working class people do not have any “back-up” money to eat or pay rent. This book will probably make readers appreciate the working class a little more and maybe next time they are out, they can thank those workers for the great job that they do in society. The truth is, someone has to do these jobs and who knows, one day it might be any one of us!

Its a Wolverine clone - but she's a hot chick! What more does a fan-boy want? Not plot or well written dialogue surely. Oh weapon-x program, when will you stop forcing young, feral mutants to struggle with their humanity and the thin line that holds the inner-beast in check while tortured by inner-demons and memories they can't trust?
