Read this book a couple of years back after I met the author on myspace. Gotta say it's one of the best I've yet encountered. The author's exploration of fantasy themes is fresh and unique, the story compelling and fast-paced, the characters -- captivating and intriguing. A true master work.

I enjoyed this book, although I'm not at all sure why anyone would think it was a "must-read" item. Two English professors, one American and one British, exchange jobs for 6 months with interesting consequences for their work and family lives -- and the ending does not resolve those consequences. The American university in the book is a thinly-disguised (very thinly -- the view is of the "Silver Span" bridge) version of Berkeley. Did I mention this takes place in 1969? There's a lot of humourous commentary on student protests, the sexual revolution, women's liberation, etc. I don't know if this would even be that funny to someone who didn't live through those days. I also had a hard time believing that the life of the average Brit was as mingy as it was portrayed here -- I almost felt the author would start talking about ration cards any minute. By the way, the British university is likely a disguised version of the U. of Birmingham, where the author taught for many years. The Guardian's critics seem to find academia a ripe field for humour, as this is far from the only academic novel included in their Comedy section. Anyway, Changing Places will while away a few happy hours, but you can also have a happy life if you never read it.

The bible of learning theory, the book every machine learning theorist should have in his/her private library. Well ... let's be more precise! What is this book about? This book is about the theory of machine learning, and more specifically, the theory of regression when you do not have any strong assumption on the model of the data (so, no Gaussian assumption, no Linear assumption, etc ...). Most of the book is about proving that this specific approach is consistent and then book provides a convergence rate for that method. You can see these kinds of arguments for local averagers (K-NN, Kernel method, Partitioning), Least Squares methods (with and without regularization), and several other topics. If you are interested in theory of machine learning, you should read at least some parts of this book - even though the book is not an easy read (I plan to understand the whole book in the next few years!!!). Remember that this book is not an algorithmic book. So, you should not read it to learn or even understand "new" machine learning methods. Use Hastie, Tibshirani, and Friedman's book instead which is an excellent book on its own (though not the easiest one anyway). Also note that this book does not consider classification problems so much. However, the theory -as I partially understand it- should not be that different. If you are really interested about the theory of classification, you may like to read Deroye, Gyorfi, and Lugosi, A Probabilistic Theory of Pattern Recognition, 1997 instead.

Not as well written as the rest of the Wallflower series - I'm not so sure I believed the relationship completely. But, I still loved it, and St. Vincent was sweet in this.

This book - and its sequel, Lucky Child: A Daughter of Cambodia Reunites with the Sister She Left Behind - are an amazing, heartbreaking and yet ultimately hopeful story of a young girl's journey from the security of her privileged home in Phnom Penh through the horror and ravages of the countryside under Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge, to safety and loss in the U.S. She is spunky, loving and definitely a survivor through years of captivity, deprivation, hunger, and separation. These are GREAT reads, you will never hear about Cambodia in the same way after you read them.
A short, but interesting read. Illustrates how a man and woman who socially form an apparent romantic bond, are nevertheless incomaptible in their intimate and sexual lives.

I really enjoy this series. I love that the characters are normal people who change is response to things going on in society. The characters are smart, realistic, and likeable. The story is engaging and exciting without unnecessary violence. I hope this author keeps writing!
