I HATED this book and nearly paid The Strand to take it off my hands.

Why all the hype? This was my first and only Vonnegut. I am thoroughly unimpressed.

"Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen started off annoying me and ended up enchanting me. Up until about page one hundred I found this book vexing, frivolous and down right tedious. I now count myself as a convert to the Austen cult. I must confess I have been known to express an antipathy for anything written or set before 1900. I just cannot get down with corsets, outdoor plumbing and buggy rides. Whenever someone dips a quill into an inkwell my eyes glaze over. This is a shortcoming I readily own up to but have no desire to correct. So I admit to not starting this book with the highest of hopes. I did really enjoy Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" however and so when my friend threw the gauntlet down I dutifully picked it up. Boy did I hate him at first. To get anywhere with this book one has to immerse oneself in the realities of life and marriage in the nineteenth century. At first all this talk of entailment and manners just left me cold. I liked the language to be sure. Austen's dialogue is delightful through out but dialogue alone (no matter how delicious) does not a great novel make. A hundred pages or so in though I started to see what a shrewd eye for character this Austen woman had. Mr. Collins was the first person I marvelled at. His character springs forth fully formed as a total but somehow loveable ass. From that point on I found much to love about this book. I was so into it by the end that I was laughing at some characters, sympathizing with others and clucking my tongue at an unhappy few. In short I was completely absorbed. In conclusion I must now count myself a fan of Miss Austen's novels (and not just their fim adaptations) and do so look forward to acqauinting myself with more of her work in the future. "Emma" anyone?

I thought this book was wonderful. Its the kind of book you could read over and over and discover something new each time.

Totally engaging - even if you weren't there (or even alive) this book makes you feel like you were part of the punk movement. McNeil does a brilliant job of combining interviews to really bring the book to life.

For all you Vogue-ites out there, this is the magazine's food writer. He's also been a judge on Iron Chef (loves Batali).

I am a big fan of this Anglican Church-psychodrama series, but this one kind of gives me the ick. I don't like how she writes her gay characters.

WARNING: You must read Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," "The Rolling Stones," "Time Enough for Love," and "The Number of the Beast" before reading this book. It would also be helpful to have read "Stranger in a Strange Land," and "Friday." Familiarity with Baum's Oz stories and Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars series is recommended. I think that a lot of the negative reviews here stem from people reading the series out of order or just picking this book up independently of the series or any other Heinlein book. The Cat Who Walks Through Walls is a volume in the continuing saga of Lazarus Long and what has come to be known as the World as Myth stories. Richard Ames is a resident of Golden Rule habitat, which is a space colony near the moon. He is out to dinner with Gwen Novak when a man is killed directly in front of him. Before he knows it, he's running for his life from an enemy (or enemies) unknown. Because this is World as Myth, there's a lot more to the story than Richard is prepared to believe. Those of us familiar with (and half in love with) Lazarus Long might be put off by Richard's disdain for the man, but his position is understandable. Familiar friends are revisited yet again, especially after the action moves to Boondock, where little clothing is worn and lots of intimate action occurs regardless of gender or familial relation. In one amusing exchange, Richard calls Lazarus a "mother-" and Gwen replies, "In his case, that's merely descriptive." If that sort of thing is reprehensible to you, you might want to skip this (and everything else Heinlein's ever written). Fans who overlook (or agree with) his philosophy, and sexism, will find this a rollicking good time. P.S. Unfortunately, Pixel, the title character, doesn't show up until much later than I had remembered. That's sad, because he's awesome!

I struggled to get through this book. It's very slow and I found it hard to muster up any sort of feeling beyond apathy for any of the characters. Maybe religion in the midwest is not the topic for me, but I had a hard time getting through to the end. Beside the eloquent writing style, I have a hard time finding the reasons the book won the Pulitzer.
