I've been meaning to read this book for years, but lost it at some point, and only recently found it again. I love Jane Austen's books, and anything that has to do with them automatically makes it on my to-read list. Sometimes those books are great. Sometimes they are terrible. For the most part, I liked this book. It's not really anything like the other Shannon Hale books I've read. I loved the Goose Girl and it's sequels, and really enjoyed the Actor and the Housewife. This one seemed a little more like a conventional romance. I appreciated the struggle Jane was going through in trying to figure out what she wanted in life. Her whole life seemed to revolve around finding a guy to settle down with, and unfortunately, she had incredible high standards due to her obsession with the heroes from Jane Austen's novels. I'm relieved that she finally figured out that those false ideals aren't what she really wanted, but instead she wanted something real and honest in her life. Once she figured that out, instead of having this ideal guy in the back of her mind to compare every man she met to, she was able to put that aside and focus on the relationship (and man) at hand. I don't actually think Jane changed all that much, to be honest. Yes, she figured out that even Mr. Darcy himself was probably not perfect, and that she couldn't idealize him anymore, but she still wanted a boyfriend with whom she had a serious connection and a real future. She went to Austenland figuring it would be her last hurrah before giving up men for good (yeah, right), and instead (view spoiler) I'm happy for the characters that their lives turned out in a positive way, but it's all a little too neat and tidy to feel completely real, if that makes any sense. Also, I have a big issue with all the talk of spinsters, both from Jane and others. They way they talked about life, it's like they thought that, even in our day in age, if eventually you don't find anyone to marry, you're this subpar being that doesn't matter as much, a spinster. and of course, that only applies to women. The word spinster needs to be taken out of our vocabulary as offensive and mean. There is nothing wrong with choosing to be alone romantically, and it doesn't make one's life less full of love and happiness. Staying single is just as much a valid life-choice as picking between the two guys in the love triangle of your life. All in all, an entertaining read, especially for Austen fans. Just don't expect anything mind blowing.
