4th of the Chesapeake Bay series. I would classify this as another Nora Roberts book. Nothing out of ordinary from that author however, I adored one of the line she wrote; "You know one of the really great things about women? Not just that they have breasts - which can't be over-appreciated, but all the cool things they put them in." - page 214.

Not too bad an example of the genre. Although the protagonist reminds me of Thomas Covenant. She whines and complains a lot about getting waylaid into the job of Green Rider albeit not to the same degree that Covenant whines and refuses to grow up in all 6 of those books. I will read the next one before I really make up my mind. So good, but not great.

Really enjoyed this book!! Can't say much without spilling the beans, but basically its the story of a man's time in the circus, told as he sits reflecting in a nursing home. The depiction of circus life is sometimes rather graphic, and not always nice, but it plays an important role in defining who he is, and the relationships he has with the other characters. There were also some thoughtful observations on how we treat our elderly, dramatized in brief but rich interactions between the character and the nurses who care for him. A fairly quick read - I finished the book in two sittings over the weekend.

I expected more from this book, because of all of the hype (it being a Book Club read by Oprah) but I felt it jumped all over the place with the characters and not enough emphasis was placed on Pecola...it ended too soon.

Slow at the start but worth sticking with it for the big twist ending. Really a meditation on different kinds of love -- friends, colleagues, teachers, children, lovers. The book picks up when the main character, Marina, makes it to the Amazon jungle to learn more about her former mentor's research into a fertility drug made from the bark of yellow trees named martins. Marina, who at the start seemed so passive to me I wanted to shake her, finds herself on a completely unexpected path and by the end of the book you know her experiences in the jungle have changed her life forever. The author has excellent observation and elegant writing skills.

I read this book in one sitting in college, and it changed me forever. I revisit it often, and it never ceases to amaze with its fire and its passion. It also contains one of my favorite literary passages: "He had often thought of his loneliness, for example, as a condition which testified to his superiority. But people who were not superior were, nevertheless, extremely lonely--and unable to break out of their solitude precisely because they had no equipment which with to enter it. His own loneliness, magnified so many million times, made the night air colder. He remembered to what excesses, into what traps and nightmares, his loneliness had driven him; and he wondered where such a violent emptiness might drive an entire city." I mean… the man is a master of words.
