The premise of this book, that America may break up into smaller parts or get new states at some point in the future, is convincing, and perhaps seems more probable now than when it was written pre-real estate crash, pre-Obama. It mainly argues this by showing that many other countries have broken up recently and enumerating some of the serious difficulties America is having with Native American relations, immigrant relations, red state vs. blue state stuff, etc. However, the book reads like a series of factoids, and every sentence is in a different font, size, or alignment than the previous sentence, so it tends to read like this: BIG GIANT FACT (tiny little fact) Medium sized fact so as you can see... ANOTHER BIG GIANT FACT The books was more or less a list of statistics with very little actual argument going on. Plus, it was poorly structured. For example, the chapter on Europe was mostly about Canada.

At age 43, and after about 25 years of abusing his body with tobacco, alcohol, and overeating, the author did something completely unplanned and largely unexpected. He started to bike and to run. Since that time he has lost about 100 lbs and completed 40+ marathons! In the first part of this autobiographical/philosophical book Bingham relates his failures and inabilities as an athlete during his school years. Though he had high hopes and great determination, he was, sadly, largely without ability. The aplomb and humor with which he recounts those early years though is, and don't say this often or lightly, laugh out loud funny! I hardly ever laugh out loud when I read books, no matter how funny they are. I had to interrupt my reading to share several quotes with whoever was close enough to lend me an ear. Did I mention that this book was engaging enough that I completed it in one sitting? Well, I did. Later in the book Bingham recounts his early running experiences and realizes when he starts to run in organized races and that he is competitive...not competitive in the sense that he wins anything, but that he is competitive inwardly and outwardly with the people he finds himself with in the middle to the back of the pack, whether it's a 5K or a marathon. While non-runners will probably enjoy the early section of this book the most, runners will be better prepared to understand what he is getting at in the later chapters when he shares his thoughts and philosophy on running. Bingham is a gem...full of humor, self deprecation, and having the ability to relate to the ordinary runner and person. You know...the person who runs in the middle to the back of the pack. I highly recommend this book to runners everywhere. You don't have to be fast, but you do have to have experienced at least some running, including an organized race or two to get the full scope of this book. FYI - I started running during the winter of 2007 when I was 47, and I ran my first race, a 5K, that spring. Since then I've run 5K, 10K, and half-marathon races. Like Bingham I'm not especially fast, but I was there. So as someone who also took up racing in my middle ages, I understand completely what Bingham is getting at in this book...though I have to admit that my ambitions as a runner don't come close to his. So I say, run on, man! 4 stars overall.

Beautiful descriptions of the Mexican countryside. Since it is written wholly from the hero's view, it leaves us hanging as to the fate of several of the characters. It is hard too believe that a young man could endure all these trials and tribulations, but it is a good read. One wants him to succeed, and I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd book in the trilogy.

A notícia da revolução ocorrida em Lisboa vai representar uma pedrada no charco, que vai abanar completamente a rotina dos habitantes desta pequena vila e fazê-los trocar instantaneamente de posições. Os moçambicanos vêem as suas esperanças de um Moçambique independente e livre crescerem exponencialmente, enquanto os poucos colonos brancos se interrogam sobre o que fazer face à perspectiva de uma onda de violência ou simplesmente desaparecem de mansinho. A queda do regime da Metrópole afecta especialmente Lourenço Castro, o inspector chefe da PIDE local, e a sua família. Esta leitura revelou-se interessante, não só pela temática da queda do Estado Novo, que é um assunto que me agrada bastante, como pela belíssima linguagem deste escritor. As várias personagens tecem uma rede de contrastes. O inspector, sério e implacável durante o dia, que tem um cavalinho de madeira de brincar no quarto e não consegue dormir sem apertar nas mãos um pedaço de pano. Também o desprezo pela cultura africana de Lourenço contrasta totalmente com a vontade da sua tia Irene de entender a religião e os costumes dos indígenas e de absorver a sua cultura. Contrastam igualmente a esperança de alguns, como o mecânico Marcelino, na independência de Moçambique, e a tenacidade que empregam nas actividades nesse sentido, com a apatia do seu tio, que considera absurdo tentar mudar o mundo pois “O céu nunca pousará na terra nem a montanha descerá ao vale”. No que diz respeito à história em si, não me prendeu nem um bocadinho. Sem dúvida que, para mim o ponto forte deste livro é mesmo a beleza da escrita, com expressões e jogos de palavras únicos.

** spoiler alert ** I thought this book put a nice spin on the vampire mythos, but Barnes makes her vampires seem so complicated, it's kinda exhausting to think about it. However, Kali's story isn't about vampires. Well, it's about vampires, but also about zombies, hellhounds, dragons, you know, the usual (or as Barnes refers to it "the preternatural"). The aspects of the book I didn't like were the unnecessary death at the end and the underdeveloped romance between Kali and her dude (you'll know who I'm talking about once you read it). Overall, this book was a light read and very entertaining.
