Set in an alternate universe (book came out in 2008 and is set in 2009) where McCain is the President of a US under constant terrorist attack and the war in Iraq is both worse and more technologically advanced, Shooting War follows an independent blogger turned mainstream journalist. Except he isn't a journalist at all. He researches nothing, is told where to be and simply points his camera at things happening and gets renoun somehow. But the problem with this book isn't the passive protagonist (though it is annoying), it is in the painful caricatures, the long winded speeches and the lazy satire. I was honestly amazed that one of the writers is a journalist, given how painfully unaware this book seemed to be. That this is meant to be a critique of the media shows how deep the problem is--even the critics are uninformed, motivated by painfully partisan beliefs and incapable of understanding subtlety and nuance. Further, the narrative is very herky jerky, moving in time, location and logic in a way that makes little sense, as if entire sections were removed at the last moment and the seams couldn't be stitched in a logical manner. The art is sometimes strong, often times mediocre and sometimes terrible. The meshing of photos with art are particularly gruesome affairs, with no seeming logic behind when a scene is rendered or reproduced, and the integration of the effects is laughable at best. It makes the book come off as a print equivalent of B-movie special effects. It's a shame, really. This book has a lot going for it, but it falls in on itself.

The book is about a woman's struggle to deal with intense familial suffering. I feel like a bad person for feeling this, but the book just seemed incredibly self absorbed to the point of being almost painful. I'm sure she must not be, and that the book was probably a necessary part of her grieving process.

This book is the answer I needed all those years in Japanese class when my fellow students seemed to idolize the Japanese as if they were some sort of super race that could do no wrong and had invented everything that was cool. This book shows what a gaijin would face during their time in Japan. Like Will Ferguson they would have their share of adventures and meetings with really nice, helpful people and then they would have those times when they just wished they weren't treated as entertainment and just accepted as a person. I was amazed at how many Japanese people told Ferguson that he would never find a ride hitch-hiking, yet he seemed to have little trouble finding willing (or less willing) travel mates. I also found it interesting that often once he had been picked up the person who picked him up would invite him to join their journeys or would attempt to join him on his travel. I also loved how Ferguson didn't shy away from "debating" with some of the folks he hitched rides with. I loved the way he gave the racist Monkey expert some troubled moments and even though it was a bit mean, I couldn't help but laugh out loud about the complex he gave the man in the bar whose eyes "just looked Korean"... The book was both a wake up call to people who would assume that Japanese people are always accommodating and accepting of foreigners and yet it still made me long to go to Japan.

The Teachings of Don Juan (The Teachings of Don Juan #1), Carlos Castaneda 1-The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge 2 - A Separate Reality: Further Conversation with Don Juan 5- The Second Ring of Power (1975) دومین حلقه ی قدرت ـ چاپ اول 1364 ترجمه ی مهران کندری و مسعود کاظمی 6- The Eagle's Gift (1981) هدیه ی عقاب ـ 1365 ترجمه ی مهران کندری و مسعود کاظمی 7- The Fire from Within (1984) آتش درون ـ 1368 ترجمه ی مهران کندری و مسعود کاظمی 8-The Power of Silence, Further Lessons of don Juan (1988) قدرت سکوت ـ 1368 ترجمه ی مهران کندری 9- The Art of Dreaming (1994) هنر خواب بینی ـ 1374 ترجمه ی فرزاد همدانی 10- Magical Passes: The Practical Wisdom of the Shamans of Ancient Mexico 11- The Wheel of Time: The Shamans of Mexico Their Thoughts About Life Death & the Universe (The Teachings of Don Juan #11), Carlos Castaneda 12- The Active Side of Infinity

the first book in the heritage series (scions, druids, elf queen, and talismans) and I have to say that this series is my favorite. I'll have to re-read them again to see why, but I remember that as I was reading all the shannara books, this series was my favorite.

I found the that the characters sometimes seemed a little one-dimensional, especially the main character. I love stories involving folklore and hidden worlds, which is why it was surprising to me that I struggled through certain parts this book. I am glad I persevered, but I’m not sure if I’d read the next installment. I would have to wait and see what William Horwood comes up with next, and if it’s more engaging than this, the first in a new series.

Volume 2 begins with Gus trapped in the "preserve," where he meets several other animal-kid hybrids, also locked up in the prison camp. Wendy, a pig-girl, is one of the few who can speak, and she tells him what actually happens there: someone comes to get the hybrid kids, and they don't come back. Soon Gus is taken to talk with the doctor, who believes that something in Gus's past will explain the plague. Meanwhile, Jepperd considers his own past, reviewing how he came to be the person he is, and deciding who he wants to be. The post-apocalyptic elements are clearer here; there's a better sense that this is something that Happened to the world and now we're living in it, rather than something that's happening Out There Far Away. Violence is ticking up, pushing this more toward upper-high school or adults.

Ehhh....I'm not as into Block anymore. Still, this is one of her most interesting books. I gave it two stars because even as interesting as it was, I think I am burned out by the so-called hippie and her descriptions of places like Jamaica....sigh. Still, this book makes me want to explore Tarot further. And I'll probably read it again.
