I’ve yet to review a Sookie book because I’ve been a bit embarrassed by how much I enjoy them. I don’t like mysteries much. I read very little “paranormal’ fiction. Bodice-rippers embarrass me, and I hate, hate, hate vampire fiction. But I love the Sookie books. Huh? They’re not fine literature, but hey, I’m not a real fan of that either. What they are is a fun, light, addictive read. Sookie is the literary equivalent of Buffy, the lovable, slightly dimwitted ,brave heroine that you can’t help but root for, even as she’s thrown into the most impossible, ridiculous situations. She’s surrounded by a cast of colorful, lovable characters. Throughout it all she is sweet, funny and immensely likable. There are nine in the series, so of course, some books are better than others. Some storylines seem a bit repetitive, especially in the 5th or 6th book. The motivations of some characters aren’t exactly clear, but I imagine the author is holding out on us, in order to give us a big payoff in later books. The author has created a fascinating, fully developed world, very believable despite being populated by fantastic creatures. There are almost too many characters, which is why I like that Harris did some house cleaning in this book, much darker than its predecessors. Other than that I feel like this book was setting us up, putting the pieces in place for an even greater story, which I think we’ll see in book 10.

An interesting and complex little book, excellent in highlighting why we do what we do, and what drives us to love and to hate. It's about people and culture and language and manipulation. It's very rich, and it certainly merits a second reading. I do love that two of the principle characters are engineers, and there are a number of engineering-types in the periphery. Then get wound up in their little engineering problems to the point where they overlook the bizarre human drama around them. I wonder why that spoke to me?

I have conflicted feelings about this book. It was really good but was lacking a couple of things. Don't get me wrong, there were some really good things about this book and the good outweighed the bad by far which is why I'm rating this book 4/5 instead of 3/5. I'll start with the bad and move on to the good. I don't want to spoil things so I won't get into details about it but only getting to see Samuel for a paragraph or two in a church just didn't do it for me. He is one hell of an interesting character and I really missed him in this book. I understand that this is Mercy's series and that it isn't about Samuel but I adore him and feel that he is almost always underused. In River Marked, Samuel wasn't needed but I still missed him. I really need more Samuel in my life. He is by far my favorite wolf and not just in this series. Moving on to the other thing that kind of irritated me. Mercy and her new husband were on their honeymoon. You would think we'd get a beautifully written sex scene. That didn't happen. Sex was alluded to on numerous occasions but we didn't get any action. I found that rather disappointing. I was hoping for some super hot Mercy/Adam sex and felt jipped. I know that this is an UF series and not PNR but at least in the last book we actually got some sex. Sex is not needed in a book to make it good. I've read plenty of UF and YA books that lacked sex but again I say this was their honeymoon. I feel it was needed in this case. On to the good. When you take away the two things that I was disappointed with you are left with pure awesomeness. Mercy never fails to kick ass. It was great to FINALLY get some background on Mercy's heritage; who her dad was and how he came to be. I absolutely loved the addition of the character that brought all of this to light and hope that he comes back at some point. Kudos to Patricia Briggs for taking a creature of legend and making it her own. He definitely fit well into Mercy's world. The big bad in this book was just that; big and bad. I guess I should also add that the River Devil is super frakkin creepy and gross. I most certainly would not want to come across a creature like that. Just like always, in the end Mercy kicked its ass. Mercy is a very original character and the series as a whole keeps me wanting more with each book. I love the artwork for these books and think that the cover for River Marked is the best to date. Can't wait to see what happens next!!

“In Search of Persian Pottery” is a fairly old book (1966,1972). As a result the quality of images provided as examples of different kinds of glazing and throwing is not so impressive. From the very beginning in the book, Yoshida goes directly to the technical details without explaining much of the basics. So I think a bit of Persian history and a brief knowledge of glazing is necessary to understand what he is actually talking about. This book can be a useful companion guide to a visit to Islamic section of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), British Museum and Iran Bastan museum (Iran's National Museum in Tehran).

I had to turn in this book to library before I finished as it was "on hold"...hmmmm! and I have been enjoying reading it...do have to get by some of the language; and the fact that the story-teller is the Grimm Reaper(!) but I love the characters and the 1940's Nazi time; and I will try to find it again to finish.
