The thing that makes this book so bad is that it could have been so good. The idea is really good and the plot when summed up isn't that bad. What kills this is book is the sheer perfectness of the characters and all of the extra stuff. Do we really need to be reminded that Xavier's hair is nutmeg brown twenty times? Everything is also too obvious. The moment Jake Thorn with black hair, a snake tattoo, black clothes, and a love of reptiles showed up I knew he was the bad guy. (view spoiler)

It was awesome. I was tugged into the book. This deals with kidnapping of a 16 year old girl from an airport. The kidnapper was different - I felt sympathetic towards him, he could tug at my heartstrings, I was even rooting for him midway through the book - I know, such a horrible act should not be condoned - separating a young girl from her family and all that she loves and believes in just because of the mistaken belief that she will be better off in a different atmosphere. Still, the author made the kidnapper powerful enough to make the reader have empathy towards him. The romantic in me really wanted him to escape scot-free and later date and marry the girl, with the approval of all concerned. But the pragmatic in me could not condone it.I really admired the kidnapped girl - she was so courageous and headstrong amidst so much adversity. She adapted well to every situation. She had pity and empathy in her heart, but not to the extent that it destroyed her.Another great thing about the book is the vivid description - the Australian Sandy desert is described so pictorially that one feels one is there every moment. I could see the buildings, outhouses, the rock collection, the oasis and all the animals, snakes and nature described in the book. I let my imagination run riot. (view spoiler)

I read the first 2 chapters a day or two ago and was intrigued. Today I picked it up again and read the third chapter. It had me laughing out loud. So, I finished it today. This is, apparently, a children's book. Back in the day, children were considerably more well-read. They would have had to be, otherwise they would miss the multitude of references to other works of literature. For example there is the part that goes something like this (not quoting verbatim, but it goes something generally like this): "This," said Katharine, "is exactly what I would call a tulgey wood." "Don't!" said Martha. "What if something were to come whiffling through it?" And that was it. There was no further explanation. The story just went on. How many children do you know these days that have actually read any of Lewis Carroll's works? I suspect that this is one of those books that can be read and understood well enough by children, but can be appreciated much more by adults. I thought it was very clever. In fact, I would not be surprised if there were things in this book that I didn't catch. The pacing was good - at times it was slow and nothing particular seemed to happen (which was as it should be - after all, the children are having a dreadfully boring summer at first), but at other times! Bam, bam, bam, bam! One thing right after another! All in all, it was Good Stuff. I recommend it.

A very touching book, in some ways. It is one of those ones that you might not want to read at night, but whatever time of day it is, Trisha is a loveable young girl right from the start, and as corny as it sounds, I was reading it, hoping she would make the right choices, really wishing that she stays safe... Also, this book named the Sub-Audible for me, and that has made a lot of difference. Really useful, having a name for that shizzle. It's really hard to explain though, so you'll just have to read the book.

At first it was a quick and easy, interesting read, but I ultimately found the skipping around in time to be a bit confusing. I also realize that the author was blessed with a life full of well-known musicians, but there are times in the book where she seems to just list those people with no real purpose to the book..more like: I went to a party and here are all the famous people who were in attendance. That was a little off-putting to me. On the other hand, I really enjoyed her descriptions of June Carter Cash's relationship with her stepchildren and how June described them all as "her children"; the author's eulogy for June was elegant and seemed truly heartfelt. I hope that if I am ever asked to write a eulogy for anyone, I can write one half as moving.
