Not sure what I expected from this novel, but I liked it. I found it pretty verbose, but I'd have to say that fits with the other Salinger I've read. But he's got a point, and if you can just hang in there you'll find it. Eventually. Some people say this book reads like two separate stories. But I would say it reads like two connected stories in the same anthology. Or something like that.

The first real history book ever written, that is, history as we come to know it (Herotodus was a bit too flexible with his use of data). Though written two thousand five hundred years ago, it is still all too relevant to today's political events.

I so enjoy catching up with the latest heart pattering of Ms. Brockman's men and their women. The story was fast paced and as always sexy, witty and a fun couple hours of reading enjoyment.

melancholy + beauty at its best. What more could one ask for from a book?

Written as if by a preadolescent boy in the 1960s in Ireland, this book actually touches on much deeper issues than the writing style would suggest. How our parents and other grown up affect us are portrayed through the eyes of a little boy.

Tillie is not your usual chicken; she has her own way of doing things. And within the story there "lays" a treasure hunt, Tate digs it!

First book in the Russian urban fantasy series. Set in Moscow, it describes a typical war of darkness against light, except that both sides are Machiavellian bureaucracies. Followed by Day Watch, Twilight Watch, and most, recently, Last Watch (not actually the final book).

Until the more recent Sprewell and Artest shenanigans, the Kermit Washington-Rudy Tomjanovich fight was the most infamous bout of violence in NBA history. It might seem strange to devote an entire book to a single twenty-second incident, but Feinstein does a pretty good job. Of particular interest are the first and third acts of the book, in which Feinstein painstakingly describes Tomjanovich's and Washington's lives leading up to the infamous punch, and in which he describes the aftermath of the punch that almost killed Tomjanovich and made Washington an NBA pariah. Less engaging is the book's middle section on the punch itself; Feinstein describes it from so many different angles and perspectives in such awkward ways that the book's climax loses a lot of its power. Nevertheless, this is a solid entry in sports history that does an especially good job of portraying the two principal figures of an ugly event as merely human, and caught up in the moment of something that neither wanted.
