The characters are three-dimensional. I loved the complexity of their relationships. Argyle excels in writing great pacing, speeding it up when the action dictated it and slowing it down to stretch out the tension. The symbolism of wings and butterflies flutters throughout. Monarch shows the fragility of life and the human strength to go on. Monarch by Michelle Davidson Argyle is a thriller unlike any other with complex characters and a touching plot filled with hope, life, and love in the face of fear and danger.

The premise for surrogates is intriguing and i particularly like the unique artwork style. but at it's core this is a run-of-the-mill detective story. however, with a bit more development and a competent screenwriter, there is still much potential for the upcoming film based on this graphic novel.

It was phenomenally popular which pricked my interest. Many people have described Waller's prose as poetic - I found it rather repetetive and wooden. An attempt at the sparseness of Hemingway gone rather wrong. As for the story, the appeal probably lies in all the idea of middle aged passion, love conquering all, including apparently any immorality and guilt in what amounts to infidelity. Not that I am squeamish or moralistic - just that it amuses me somewhat to find this book so wildly popular in America and probably among people far more moralistic than myself who would be shocked into outrage by the words: they had an affair.

I think this is an excellent historical source and should be read by anyone looking to form a balanced view of American History. That being said, I don't think this book should ever be used as an exclusive source. The overall theme is white, rich guys = bad. Poor, minorities = downtrodden by the man. It's not a theme that can really be argued, but I cannot believe that every single person in the history of the world was a greedy, uncaring, scrooge out to rule the world by any means necessary.

I wish this book delved deeper into how Deo survived his amazing ordeals, both in war-torn Burundi and New York. On around page 100, Kidder even poses the question of how a man with no contacts, very little money, and no grasp of English could go from being homeless in Central Park to Columbia University in a very short time. Unfortunately, he writes 150 or so more pages without answering that. Nor does he wonder how a man who cannot sleep because of (understandably) atrocious nightmares manages to get straight A's in medical school. I don't doubt Deo's accomplishments; I want to know more about how he was able to manage these and other feats. I finished the book and still don't know.

I wished for more stories of Alex and less of her trouble getting grants. I got the feeling that she would have abandoned Alex in some lab if the money had not come through. It is only after his death she realizes how much he meant. But I guess that is life, you never realize what you have 'til it's gone. And perhaps you have to distance yourself like that when you're in the science field.
