It's been a while since I read this, so I'll be vague. This volume continued in Martin's style of storytelling, and furthered the plot, but was also unfulfilling for a few reasons. Primary amongst these is that books 4 and 5 split the dozens of "protagonists" so that in book 4 we don't see anything of a number of the characters we've come to look for (Jon Snow for example). Additionally, some of the characters we are saddled with in book 4 are just painful to read. The only character I particularly looked forward to in this volume was Arya. The character I openly despise is Cersei. For an author that does an annoyingly good job of turning antagonists into protagonists (or at least understandable villains, see Tyrion, Jaime, etc) it's disappointing that Cersei (who we are forced to accept as a POV character) appears to just be a straight up vile lunatic, with no real redeeming qualities whatsoever. And this is coming from a guy who almost puts Drusilla as his favorite Buffy character... I still look forward to book 5, but largely because I'm hoping it contains much of what book 4 lacks. As an aside, I'm seriously curious about some population estimates of this world... at this point it would seem that a vast majority of the fighting-aged male population is dead, and that the armed nobility is extremely weakened... We've gone through rank upon rank of named night and noble, such that I keep expecting to see Herb the Hedge-Knight, winner of such vicious combats as "the squabble over some carrots at the market" and "the battle of Badon Hill, which turned out to be Herb drunk and boxing with a tree" inheriting the throne because everyone else with a claim is dead.
