I really got a lot out of this book. This teaches you how to to get more out of your reading, to get past the superficial glance and delve deeply, take notes, and put the material into your own words. It has a comprehensive recommended reading list, and is tied in to The Great Books of the Western World by Encyclopedia Britannica and Gateway to the Great Books-- both sets of encyclopedias are well worth investing in, especially if you homeschool or just want to further your own education independently. update: this is one of the few books where I actually own the hardcopy, ebook, and audiobook. I wish I'd had this as a teenager, to help me analyze my readings better in high school and college. This one has definitely been added to our homeschool curriculum. This is how to pursue an education, and to learn to think and evaluate any propositions for yourself!

I have been wanting to read Sue Grafton for awhile but I kept putting it off because my father didn't care for her books. I didn't love the book yet I didn't hate the book either. A is for Alibi was an enjoyable read. I will try her books again. This story is about a PI, Kinsey Millhone, who is hired by a woman, Nikki Fife, who was found guilty of murdering her husband. Nikki hires Kinsey to prove that she was innocent. As Kinsey starts looking at everyone that knew Nikki's husband back then I had a gut feeling that I knew who had killed Mr. Fife. I just had that feeling from the way the person interacted with Kinsey. That made the book a little boring because I just wanted to know if I was right. The book got suspenseful when I had about 3 chapters left to read. The ending of the story was different from what I am used to when reading a mystery. I was glad to see that I was right about who had committed the murder. Since the book took me awhile to read I gave the book 3 1/2 stars.

** spoiler alert ** I loved this! Yet another case where the book was better than the movie. Dont get me wrong- I love the movie and the cast was phenomenal. However, the story in the graphic novel was so much more relatable. Instead of Enid falling for creepy ol' Seymour and forming a relationship with him (who, by the way, is Bob Skeets), she throws herself at a guy her age. Perhaps my favourite scene was when she gets home from the almost-sex with Josh, is wallowing in a pool of self-loath, and her father has set out a record player with a childhood record she'd been searching all over town for. It sent her through a wave of nostalgia and reminded me of something very dear my own father would do for me. I'm still not exactly sure about the end, though. It seems like a lot of time passes from when Enid doesn't pass the Strathmore exam to when she sees Becky and Josh eating inside the diner, likely as adults. That part was a bit confusing.

Amazing. Not at all what I thought it would be like. I read a lot of books about immigrant families, but I'm not sure why.

I don't know how I escaped reading this book sooner, but since it seems to be everyone's favorite, I had to pick it up. I am so glad I did. It is a wonderful book and a fabulous escape from Chick-lit. It was a nice change of pace to read about strong, moral characters instead of silly misunderstandings and confusing plots. It is easy to see why it is such a favorite.

Please see my detailed review at Amazon Graceann's "Their Finest Hour and a Half" Review" I loved every page of this brilliantly-written homage to London, wartime can-do spirit and creative film-making. This book really ticked all the boxes for me (a book about the making of a movie in the heart of Blitz-weary London? It might as well have been called "A Book for Graceann"). The characters are well-developed (especially the grumpily hilarious Ambrose Hilliard) and I grew to love each of them for their own special quirks.

I've heard about this series and so snagged a copy when I saw it at the library. The art is nice and it's an interesting idea, but it makes me a little uncomfortable as some manga does, since the concept of computers designed to appear like beautiful women, which you entirely control, is squicky to say the least. I'm not sure I'll continue with the series but we'll see.

Good...but overrated.
I read this book shortly after viewing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button . While I appreciated Wilde's creative approach to preserving youth, the book did not capture my interest until 180 pages in.
