I had trouble finishing this book because the point of view changed constantly throughout. It was difficult to connect to either of the main characters and, as a result, I found myself not invested in the story.

This book was originally written as a serial for a Scottish newspaper. It is the continuing story of the people who live at 44 Scotland Street (the name of the first book in the series which is also very amusing). I like the characters and the short little stories - especially the ones about Bertie the precocious 5-year old and his horribly controlling mother and passive father, and Pat the lovely college student. Recommend: 16+

If you like suspense, you’ll love The Immortals by J.T. Ellison that hit the bookstores on October 1st. It’s the fifth book in the Taylor Jackson series and it’ll leave you craving more. Set in Nashville, the story centers on the murders of eight high school students found with pentacles carved into their stomachs. With no apparent clues, solving the case will take intelligence, hunches, and a fair amount of luck. Taylor Jackson, newly reinstated on the police force, is in charge of the investigation. While trying to solve the murders, she’s haunted by the disappearance of her friend and father figure, Fitz. She can’t shirk responsibility to leave and search for him, but she fears the worst and it takes an emotional toll. Ellison has given the antagonists a fresh look by pulling elements of the paranormal into an everyday world – think witches and vampire wannabes. She gives the reader a microscopic view of the Goth world underbelly and throws in drugs, sex, and peer pressure. The plot is tightly twisted, dark, and completely engrossing. And while Taylor is solving the murders, her love interest, Baldwin, is called back to Quantico to answer questions on his actions during an earlier murder investigation. It seems Baldwin has been keeping a very big secret from Taylor. One that could doom their relationship. Despite not having read the previous books, it was easy to pick up the back-story. A very satisfying read, it grabbed my attention from the start, maintained the tension throughout, and had a bombshell ending. It left me growling in frustration because I have to wait until March 2011 for the next book.

I liked this one better than Outlander (the first in the series). I can't say I love the books, as they are too long and the bodice-ripping "romance" makes me roll my eyes at times. However, I imagine I will keep reading the series because I like the history, and I want to see what happens to the characters.
