I loved this story - it was so interesting to read about a time period and place that isn't written about too often (Civil Wartime American-transplants in Paris). The story was never boring, and I loved the change in location and the details about architecture, "toilette" and fashions. It was true to life, yet not over the top. A quick, fun read!

Code crams all the knowledge of how modern computers work from start to finish such that a person with absolutely no knowledge of computers can understand. I was amazed to find out that the technology existed to make a fully functional modern computer, albeit severely limited in memory and speed, back in the early 1800s using relays. Modern computers didn’t develop in a vacuum and suddenly appear in the early 1950s, they have a long and varied history from the development of Braille, telegraph, Morse code, vacuum tubes, Boolean algebra, transistors, von Neumann architecture, and Church/Turing thesis. Even with an undergrad computer science degree I didn’t have the full understanding and deep appreciation of computers as a whole until reading this book. I now feel confident I could go to radio shack and build a computer from scratch and I’m almost tempted to do so after reading Code.

Poor Lois Waller. Every time she turns up in a SV book, her history changes, and she is always guaranteed a tough time if it's one of the SVT books. It's business as usual with Bruce picking on Lois by announcing the contents of her lunch tray to the cafeteria, 'helpfully' suggesting that she doesn't need everything on her tray on any given day, and generally being a bully. It's acknowledged that the whole school knows he's being a jerk but no one really does anything because he's Bruce Patman. Jessica even goes so far as to say Lois asks for the abuse because she's fat and she should just loose weight if she wants to fit in. Elizabeth doesn't smack her [it's the 80's/early 90's:] but she does tell her twin she's being incredibly stupid. Ned Wakefield will later tell Jessica that 'beauty is as beauty does' but Alice will soften that particular blow by completely blowing the meaning in translating for poor confused [and just insulted:] Jessica. Back to Lois. She wants to win a new bike and figures she can get enough sponsors in the bike-a-thon that she has a good chance of winning, if she can finish the race or at least come close. Unfortunately, she accidentally humiliates Bruce at lunch [seriously, she doesn't even get to enjoy that moment:] and he decides to really make her pay. So he convinces his parents to donate $600 to the school if he finishes the race. Only when he claims to have beaten Lois [who didn't finish the race, but did come awfully close:], Elizabeth isn't so sure he's telling the truth. If Jessica dropped out at mile four and arrived at Lila's just before Bruce, how could he have time to biked the whole race, even with his fantastic bike? So... Liz investigates. There's an additional bet thrown in, some Johnny Buck fan-girl moments, but mostly the book is pretty good. Right up until Lois is dieting and more accepted, not simply because she bested Bruce and stood up for herself, but because she's well on her way to becoming a more socially acceptable size. Not exactly a great way to end it, guys. Especially when you know that doesn't happen.

Gorgeous period setting, great characters, great pacing of the romance between the two main characters. I absolutely loved this book.

Paul Bacon had no particular skills or background suited for police work. But after the 9/11 attacks, he decided to join the NYPD. His account is alternately funny & slightly terrifying.

Sir Ken Thompson recommended this book in his, The Element. I picked it up with some trepidation, because the whole idea sounded so simple. But it's a top-notch self-help book, about a whole lot more than just fear. Jeffers covers the whole waterfront of ineffectual behavior and patiently tells you how to stop it and replace it with better behavior. If you're stuck at any point with fears, resentments, bottled up anger, and so on, this book will help (if you let it).

Best translation of Inferno, read this one or Mark Musa's, both poets; more academic is Mandebaum or Hollander...

A very interesting book. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories being told around the making of the Oxford Dictionary. I can't even imagine attacking a project with that much scope and detail. The author really brought the people to life and told their stories in a sympathetic, interesting way.

I found Ali's book shockingly interesting and learned a great deal about parts of the world I didn't know as well as the writer's experience of Islam.
