Elif Batuman's The Possessed: Adventures with Russian Books and the People Who Read Them was interesting but not exactly what I was expecting. When I first finished the book I was disappointing, I had began the book because I wanted to learn more about Russian literature, Russian authors, and read a few adventures about people traveling in Russia. To be fair I got some of that: I learned about Dostoevsky's travels and gambling habit, was reminded of Tolstoy's last days and his family troubles, and found out more about Isaac Babel than I was particularly interested in. In between these stories I was hoping to relive some of my own experiences in Russia. And while she includes one story about her time in St. Petersburg, most of Elif's "adventures" take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan or at Stanford in California. After a few days of reflecting I've decided that although the title was misleading I really enjoyed reading about Elif's studies and life in Samarkand (much less so about the trials and tribulations of a love torn Stanford literature grad student). In conclusion, if you're interested in learning about Russian literature and hearing stories about peoples' adventures in Russia this is not the best way to go about doing that. If you want an inside story about one woman's time as a comparative literature graduate student at Stanford and abroad, mixed with insight into the lives of a few great Russian authors, than Elif Batuman's book is perfect for you.
