Was it just me, or was this book pretty all-around cheeseball? I felt like everything wrapped up too neatly at the end, and I thought there were too many cliches (including a dramatic courtroom scene where individuals each stand up slowly behind one person....blech). The author's overall message was good, the story was complex, and there were a few parts I found moving, but it was all too ultimately saccharine and heavy-handed for my taste. I also felt that the history could have been written into the story in a way that didn't involve so much obvious explanation, and I personally don't think it's appropriate for children to read about a bootlegging scheme. I know that I'm not the best person to talk about anything feel-good, but I felt pretty bored throughout the book, and it seemed like another novel that adults have decided kids should love.

Pretty good book! The only thing I didn't like was how quickly Kyle/Adrian changed, and I didn't really feel like Lindy and Kyle/Adrian's relationship was real, emotionally.

Briefly for flavor: People speak of decades as if they form natural endings, when in fact they seldom end anything cleanly. Human survivors are dragged into new slices of time with which they feel no harmony and in which they are exposed to rasping change. So it was for Tesla in the Roaring Twenties. [p 275].

Incredibly good. The characters are realistic and complex. The atmosphere in 1920s and 1930s Berlin is intense and very present in the plot. The plot is well-driven, suspenseful, and never lags. The author has seamlessly interwoven the many elements in the story: the post-Great War depression in Germany, the murder mystery, the Anna Anderson mystery, the rise of Naziism. It's not just a murder mystery, but a detective novel as well, with intermittent and fascinating insight into the detective's puzzle-solving. The ending, I never suspected.
