This is a great novel. Jones has so many characters (the entire population of a Virgina plantation, plus many members of the surrounding county) but each one is a well-rounded human who is treated with dignity, despite the bad that he or she may do. And there's a lot of bad, b/c the book is about slavery.

Well, I had heard so much about this book I finally decided I had to read it and see for myself. It's a pretty basic thriller type genre book. A typical writing style for the best seller list - not to complicated or challenging, pretty shallow in all regards. There were a few things that I just can't get behind especially when they are integrated with an "all or nothing" style of religion but I must say that the last hundred pages did get very exciting. I am actually a little tempted to read the others just to see what happens to the "Tribulation Force."

I loved this book! It totally hit home since I have a 9 year old boy and 6 year old girl! It made me laugh out loud while teaching my kids a lesson. Can't ask for more than that!

It was amazing to realize that all of what the author talks about doesn't take place all that long ago.

Some LDS fiction is so earnest that it's sappy, and some is so frivolous and fluffy that gospel truths seem really out of place when they make an appearance. Dean Hughes manages to avoid both extremes. This book caught the real meaning of Relief Society with believable, imperfect but loveable characters.

I picked up this book for a book club. To be honest, I was dreading to read it because from my not-so-vast experience with biographies and autobiographies I expected it to be either boring or depressing, or both. The book surprised me, however. It was neither boring nor depressing - even though with the things this family experienced it could have been the most depressing story, had the author chosen to portray it that way. The real experiences described in the book were at times so incredible to me that I kept reading it as though it was fiction. I actually had to stop and remind myself several times that it was indeed an autobiography. While reading the book I couldn't help but put myself in the author's shoes and try to feel what she felt and understand as much as I could without actually being her. She had many tough experiences and had to grow up way before any kids normally would (what with cooking her own food at 3 years old and shooting guns soon after). At some point the kids in her family started acting more adult than their parents. I don't know how the author, after experiencing what she has experienced, accomplished to keep the book from becoming the one of blame and hurt feelings. She kept the story quite light and even funny at times. Beyond that, without justifying her parents' actions, she described more than enough of their positive attributes to help the reader understand their choices to some degree. I'll definitely recommend this book to my friends.

Well I waited along time for this and this series is one of the few that I will buy hardback. I loved this new installment and how Mercy and Adam's relationship grows. I did think that Partricia missed a good opportunity for Mercy and Adam to go deeper into the sexuality of their relationship. However seeing how this is more urban fantasy and less paranormal romance I will forgive her for that. She may not be comfortable writing love scenes but the tension between the two is always smoking although in this one it was more sweet. I also liked how we saw more of Stephen (sigh, even though it was not good)which I hope we see more of in the next one. I liked how we got to know more about Mercy's background and the bad guy was unique and interesting too. Overall a great addition to the series but would have liked a little more. Now I am waiting anxiously for the next one!

An interesting, quick read! Provides insight into "Chinese" parenting in America. As seen through two daughters of the author--sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Looks into the thought of how success is measured, and if Westerners are being to lax in saying, "Oh, I want my children to choose their own path and follow their dreams," or, "They did their best, that's what counts."

** spoiler alert ** I LOVED the butt book so to get my hands on this little lovely was a truly exciting moment. (Especially as the three people I have since lent the butt book to have been howling at my gates for a new one). 3V, as I have chosen to abbreviate it, was an interesting read as I found it harder to relate to the protagonist. Mara and V are at either point of the personality spectrum (which is kind of the point) and I fall somewhere in the middle. I could relate to Mara’s need to be perfect but I could also relate to V’s need to be noticed. Regardless, I had a fun time experiencing the highs and lows of an uber smart, control freak last months of high school. Mackler has created a lovely little universe here. Mara’s growth throughout the novel is well paced, believable and always a trip to read. The addition of V was a necessary one as Mara wasn’t setting the world alight with her vivacity. I cared what occurred to these characters, I liked them but I didn’t feel the same enthrallment I felt for Virginia in the butt book. James didn’t hold my interest all that much as he seemed pretty idealistic and not at all what I have come across in any sphere of the dating world. The shared reading and stories about soy milk etc was a little lame but I totally got how you can fixate on something random like a hole in a guy’s jeans. I needed James to be less of a simpering understanding guy and more of a get-off-your-ass understanding guy. The ponytail was a little ewww too. I loved Mara’s decision to become vegan as I have had friends that have done so with less of a reason (becoming a vegan to catch a guy instead of getting over one – pathetic!). It annoyed me that she wouldn’t just eat a toasted cheese sandwich though as she had no real ethical problems with dairy food. But that’s not the point, Mara’s such a control freak that her eventual unraveling and realization that she needed to smell the roses played into her veganism. Mackler’s book is a great read and I had fun. It lacked the spark of The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things but possessed the same reality, the things that ground us. The themes of family, acceptance, freedom, independence, choice and expectations are universal whether you are an adult or a teen. I enjoyed it a lot but do felt it wasn’t as focused as other Mackler titles.

Read this one as part of my history work. This is a superb book that details the original intents of the founding fathers, the things that made America great, and outlines some of the problems with the current system. It's not a complete list, but rather a readable, concise summary of the things that allowed America to reach it's current position as a world power.
