Disturbing. The best thing about this book was how it totally defied my expectations until the end. The worst thing was that nothing happened and it was a slow read. Gilead was a lot better, but this book definitely leaves an impact.

This is a great classic story of being different. I think every single child will benefit from reading this story!

This book seems to be a return to the things that makes Rushdie great.

It was the best happy ending one could expect from a regency-type story. And a well deserved 4.5 star rating. I wasn't very familiar with the details of the story since I read Bound to Him avout 3 months so I went back and started from the beginning with Bound by Deception. And read in one go, these 3 books make a wonderful story. And with each revisit, the characters proved to have more depth and gave substance to the story and love between them. [spoiler ahead] I enjoyed the way Oliver and Vincent acted their part throughout the story. Vincent is always strong, confident but unable to convey his feelings into words and that showed especially towards the end when Oliver was the one that voiced the true reasons behind Vincent's decision to change his will. And despite his reluctance to admitting his love for Oliver and preference for men, Vincent is a strong man, willing to go at any length to defend and protect what is his, in his own way. I was touched by how scared he became at the thought of losing Oliver yet again and how he couldn't stomach the tought, or even imagine his life without his lover. Oliver was a strong presence in all the books, almost becoming the narrator, at times. He was not afraid to admit to himself, and others if need be, what and who he wanted. While belittling himself, he still clung to his love for Vincent and did his best to help his lover find his place within the relationship. Though of little fortune, he posessed a high intellect, knowing just how to approach Vincent, how to make things work between them and change himself to be worthy of his lover.[end spoiler] It was a nice read and I'm kind of sad it came to an end. They were beautiful characters and it was a pleasure reading about them.

It's an interesting perspective on the world, although some of the history is a little too basic and it exaggerates the influence of various drinks. But it's not really supposed to be considered a "scholarly" work--it's history "light."

Many people complained that it was too long, but I found myself enthralled throughout the entire book. Enjoyable, atmospheric, and well written, especially for a debut novel.

Well. Dr. Gonzo looks mighty different when he's scheming with revolutionaries and unleashing five kinds of hell in a courtroom than when he's bathing with grapefruit and begging his chum to toss a Jefferson Airplane-blaring radio into the overflowing tub. Even with his unabashed love for the ladies and unorthodox approach to lawyering (not that I'd expect anything less from the high-powered mutant once portrayed as a 300-pound Samoan), this tale offered me a much more flattering impression of the Great Brown Buffalo. Unsurprisingly, my WASP-centric public-school education seems to have glossed over East LA's Chicano riots. Otherwise this book might not have been the first time it dawned on me that the racial majority has been fighting a bilingual America for years. (Strange, did White Guilt always taste this spicy?)

After reading such praised reviews, a National Book award finalist to boot, and heeding a stong recommendation to, 'buy this book now' I am sadly disappointed. I have a love-hate relationship with short stories to begin with so am prone to being less than wooed when it comes to collections. Shepard is not a bad writer and not necessarily a bad story teller, its just that THESE didn't work. For me. Yes, kudos to him for spanning such a variety of settings and time-stamps in history and characters; all obviously well researched and certainly thorough (this seemed to be a re-occuring point of praise in several reviews...shoudln't anything that is historically referenced and technically specific be well researched?) I just didn't feel a whole lot of heart in these stories. They felt more of an exercise in variety than anything. I was hoping that this would open up the doors wide to explore the rest of his work, but instead has had the opposite effect.

I Think I might need to read this book again. Murakami's writing is enjoyable if you are looking for something laid back and easy to register. I had a good time following this book until the end... when I couldn't quite figure out what happened... This is my first Murakami book so perhaps that's why I'm confused?
