The only thing this book has going for it is the decently clever name. The plot needed to be fleshed out more and the writing cried out for an editor. The book would be above average fanfic.

I started reading this book without knowing what it was about at all and so I was totally shocked when the story really started happening. It was a good book though and in the last 20 or so pages I wasn't sure what would happen - it was not predictable.

More pertinent now than ever... especially considering I would be more than willing to give Lindbergh a chance in lieu of Georgie Boy. On a side note, Roth cracks me up because he always proves he has done meticulous research on the most tedious tasks; otherwise, he's simply a huge nerd who knows how to make gloves and loves stamps.

Only from the mind of Kaori Yuki could come such a strange story: people are infected with a strange virus transmitted by bite and whole cities are obliterated (a bit I Am Legend-esque) and those infected, who turn into zombie dolls, can only be conquered by beautiful music that reminds them of their true selves for a few seconds, after which they die. The series follows a cellist, a violinist, a cross-dressing pianist, and a beautiful, noble vocalist around while they try to defeat these Guignols from various towns. An excellent read with beautiful art.

My first Steinbeck... now I finally understand why everyone loves him so much. The little pearls of wisdom that float through this book and true gems. I had to force myself to read this book very slowly, in a feeble attempt to absorb some of the depth it has to offer. I wanted to savour every morsel, yet at the same time, its hard to put down a book you're really into and easy to try and rush through it. I can't wait to pick up my next one. Any suggestions?

The second book in James Dashner's Maze Runner trilogy (I read the first, The Maze Runner, earlier this year) packed as much of a punch as its predecessor. Picking up where the first book left off, Thomas and his friends from The Glade have escaped the horrors of the maze and have been rescued by the folks from WICKED. Of course, nothing is quite as it seems, as the Gladers start to learn exactly what purpose they serve to WICKED. And they are faced with an even more dangerous challenge: surviving the Scorch Trials. This is a book about courage, faith, friendship, trust and confronting your fears. I'm deliberately obtuse in my description of the plot because I don't want to give anything away, and one of the great strengths of this book (in fact, the entire series to date) is that, much like the characters, you have no idea what to expect or what will happen next, and you don't even know if what happens is actually happening. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the third and supposedly final book in the series later this fall, although I'll be faced with the inevitable battle between wanting to read it quickly and wanting to savor it, as I was with the Hunger Games and Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogies. All in all, this is a fascinating, action-packed and captivating book that keeps you guessing.

I was impressed by how much of this book is true. At times the writing gets a little bogged down in philosophizing, but in general Vreeland has done a remarkable job of taking real people and places and creating a deeply hued, well constructed novel from them.
