Science fiction suffers from an over-abundance of authors long on imagination, but short on story-telling ability. Gibson is one of the exceptions. If Gibson had chosen to write more conventional novels, his writing ability would have launched him into the heady company of Hemingway, Vonnegut and other great 20-th century novelists. In "Neuromancer," he weaves classical allusions, psychology, Steely Dan and Velvet Underground references into a world reminiscent of the dark reality displayed in the movie "Blade Runner." With the exception of Gibson's latest novel, "Pattern Recognition," all his other work came from the world first created in "Neuromancer." Even this book's title has more than one meaning. This was the book that launched an entire sub-genre, cyberpunk, and coined the term "cyberspace." Informally, "Count Zero," and "Mona Lisa Overdrive" complete a trilogy. But "Idoru," "All Tomorrow's Parties," and the short-story compilation "Burning Chrome," all spring from this first great novel.

Easily one of my favorite books of all time. Enough said.

I found this book had a slow start. However, toward the middle it picked up and I began to really enjoy it. There is a surprising twist about two-thirds through the book that I definitely didn't see coming. Overall, a nice read.

Once again, Flavia is snooping and solving crimes while doing chemistry and avoiding her insufferable older sisters. Worth reading if you enjoyed the first book.

Debated about giving this one a 3 star rating.....but since I finally did get drawn into this story at around the 60% mark and could not deny that even if the 1st 1/2 of this story was like taking a slowly dissolving sleeping pill, that the writing was beautiful and full of imagery so I decided to bump it up to a 4 star. I tend to lean towards books with more action and this felt way too much like blah blah bleh blah......for a looooong time - and I guess it didn't help I had the same problem with the other book I read before it. It truly did redeem itself once the actual story started to unfold and kept me reading nonstop to the end. Will be interested to see how the story unfolds in the next one.

i gave old dougal some credit for this one up until the point i read "the butcher boy" then i realised he'd pretty much just copied it. besides the fact he accidentally kills his girlfriend. that's the major twist in the book incidentally, but i've really saved you the bother of reading it. it's well done, but go read "the butcher boy" instead.

Wow, where to begin? A chapter introducing each character? I barely stayed awake. Each male character was shown to be incompetent, ineffective, and boring. Each female character was shown to be strong, intelligent, practically without faults. Look, I'm about as far away from a misogynist as you can get. But this is just silly. How about strong female and male characters? How about showing equal ability? How about characters that have flaws on both sides of the gender equation? When something is as blatant as this, it kicks me out of the story like a speed bump.

This is book 3 in the series. This was, by far, the best one. I have purchased the next installment in the series, but I'm sure it can't be as good.

There is a torture scene in here that I skipped...
