the story is reminiscent of a poorly constructed intro to creative writing paper. it was very one-note, and felt overly contrived. the author set herself up for lame jokes, and tried way too hard to sound like the supposedly hip, cool characters she was writing about. all of the "action" scenes in the book were transparent as ways to get from point A to point B and nothing more. by page 100, i found myself skimming rather than reading, just trying to make it to the end. i will not be reading any other books in this series.

Well... not sure what to say about this one? I am at a loss for words, this story neither excited me or bored me. I usually listen to an audio book of this length in a little over a week and this one took me almost 4 weeks to listen too. I felt that nothing of major importance happened in this book of the series other than just a continuation of the general story line. It seemed as though a lot of new people were introduced to an already astounding number of characters and then one of my favorite characters was killed leaving me none of the original characters that I liked. I will be curious to see what comes next, hopefully some conclusions of the many different stories that are going on.

All reviews belie the intensity of the novel. An 8th grade read, in which the hapless heroine is stalked and raped by a friend, who goes free due to who his parents are. Exceptionally interesting, slightly disturbing.

Good read if you like books set from a historical angle. It reflects what the lives of early American Indians were like. It was rich in ceremonial traditions, hunting rituals, and described the landscape of the plains and deserts set around a story of a woman and the men who loved her. The author even worked in the Vikings making their way to the Americas and making markings and inscriptions on stones, which is now known as the Runestones in Heavener, Oklahoma. I have visited this historic site, so this made the book more interesting to me.

I liked it - although I think it gave me anxiety nightmares for a couple nights. I found it compulsively readable, and I really liked Mary Beth, the main character. I liked the present tense aspect of it. I would have liked to know a bit more about Max and Alex, but the limitations of the narrative kept that from happening, as we only know what Mary Beth knows.

Ahhhh, what a peaceful, yummy, cozy, rosy read. Makes me want to eat some ham pies and sip tea and sit in front of a fire, and think happy thoughts about the universe and all the people in it. Especially hard working farmers, earnest young vets, and hearty country gals. Bliss in book form.

This was another easy read - a cute follow up to "A Long Way from Chicago." I enjoyed the perspective from Maryalice and you can see her becomming a little more like the Grandma. Like the other book, it is a fun surprise to see what tricks Grandma Dowdel has up her sleeves!
