Too clever by half is the best phrase I can think of to describe this book. I still can't believe I finished it, because I found the experience of reading it mostly excruciating. It follows the many-year affair of a woman who can't seem to find a job or a direction in life and a boorish academic a-hole who uses her over and over and treats her like crap. It's one of those ha-ha-isn't-my-life-pathetic kind of books, but I never really saw the humor in it. Holding onto a thought and actually exploring it seems too daunting a task for the author to complete. I can't figure out if it is the author or the protagonist who appears to have attention deficit disorder. One thing I did like was the voice of the protagonist - told in the first person and talking to the reader directly, saying things like, "I haven't told you about this yet...". There were a few clever turns of the phrase here and there, and I probably missed many of them in my haste to finish and escape this book.

** spoiler alert ** B & N online book review book. This is where B&N sends out a book free (that isn't out there yet) and you just need to add to the online discussion with other reviewers and the author. This book was okay. The topic of witches in Salem and current research was juicy but the author didn't do so well with it all. Poor character development. "Magic" scenarios without anyone in the book being particularly spooked. I did like the flashbacks to 1600s in Salem.

I liked this one quite well--interesting characters and heart-wrenching circumstances, well portrayed. A couple of things went over the top for me, though. The main character is artistic, but that didn't come through in much other than her way-over-the-top color names; they would have felt less precious if her artistic side had played more of a role. I was also puzzled by the myriad creation myths incorporated--I didn't know if the author were trying to convey that she was of Native American origin or some other non-western ethnicity, but the family seemed pretty straightforward white American, so I don't really understand what that was about. Maybe I just missed something. But otherwise, a good work of realistic fiction with some historical fiction worked in in the journal entries.

Mckinley's first retelling of beauty and the beast. It was wonderfully written and many would say this is her best piece of writting (i am not one of those because i love the blue sword duo and deerskin too much).
This is probably my favorite book.

You know what, I liked this book. I feel no loyalty to the original, etc. and come on - Rhett and Scarlett had to get back together. I don't care! I liked it!

Loved, loved, loved it! I couldn't put it down - literally read it during my meals, and every minute I wasn't tied up with work!

I was glad finally read the source material for such a famous movie. Of course, it was very different thematically. Instead of the mostly straightforward love story in the movie, the book explores a more complicated relationship between a women (Holly) and a gay man (the narrator). This makes a huge difference on how you read Holly's character. In the movie, she's a mixed-up girl with a sad past that deep-down wants the same things that everyone else does, like to be loved and have a place to call home. In the book, she is an outsider, who thinks, feels, and acts completely differently than other people. That made her a very interesting character in the book, but it also made it harder for me to emotionally connect with her story. I highly recommend reading some literary analysis afterwards, particularly to understand all the coded references in the book (to avoid censorship). I liked the book (excuse me, novella), but I wouldn't recommend it.

Anne Lamott is one of my favorite writers, but she's probably someone you've never read unless a friend or professor has recommended her to you. This book is a book about writing for the most part. I read it first in college and then several times since. Even though I gave up dreams of being an actual writer years ago, I find that the book inspires me to pursue whatever goals I may have at the moment through patience and perseverance.

Mükemmel. Beklediğimden daha iyi kapsama alanı veya daha fazla "güncel olay".
