It's kind of ridiculous how much I liked this book, but I also love all things Ivy League. I found Amy to be a hoot and totally relatable. I may or may not have a crush on Malcolm. I want to keep reading the rest of the series... especially because I want to see if/how they flesh out the other characters.

A spectacular account of one man's journey through locked-in syndrome. The novella is a surprise as Bauby mixes his current conditions with past life's accounts. His use of dry humor masks the underlying sorrow - however, the book does not drag the reader down.

Okay, so I only read the introduction and conclusion while standing in the aisle at Borders, and haven't actually read the individual stories she recounts in this book. However, I love the author for her sentiment. She points out that the job of "saving the world" has been indoctrinated into the X, Y, and Z generations, which has left us with an immense sense of pressure that we don't know what to do with and many feel overwhelmed striving for. Hmmm, relatable? Yes, indeed. She goes on to highlight the stories of "everyday activists" who are doing the best the can to create change, which in reality is not one momentous event (contrary to high school textbooks and the 10 o'clock news), but many small underrated efforts.

Enjoyed Shevek, the landscapes and the story, with it's interesting compare and contest of ideologies. The pseudo-physics nonsense was a waste and the book would benefit from reducing the mumbo-jumbo.
