It was cute, and sweet, and some of it was kind of sad. I liked it, and actually the end sort of made me tear up (just a little), but besides that I don't have a whole lot to say about it.

Terry Brooks is a great story teller. I think I might try his Shannara book.

"Noite do Oráculo" (título em português) me pareceu um conjunto de matrioshkas, aquelas bonequinhas russas guardadas uma dentro das outras. É uma estória dentro de outra estória dentro de outra. Acho que Auster exagera um pouco na metalinguagem e o resultado é uma série de contos inacabados, mas que também não deixam de ser interessantes. Poxa, queria saber como ele tiraria Bowen do cubículo antinuclear! rs

Isn't it funny how people can feel so strongly about a book... in both extremes? It's like winter in Houston. One day you'll wake up to 30 degree weather and by noon you'll be sweating through each layer in succession because it's 80 degrees outside, and all you can say is "Um... what did I miss here?" As with The Summoning, after having finished the book I am completely gunning for the next up The Awakening - which comes out at the end of the month (April 28th I think) but it wasn't until pg 200 (out of 400) that I felt it. I remember putting a sticky note on that page which said "Finally getting good." And up until that point I was convinced that I wasn't going to bother with the next book. The first 200 pages weren't bad... but they weren't my favorite either. They felt too plot-ish, but not even fantastic plot, it was more like..."sorry, i have to get all this boring preliminary stuff out of the way, hang on... it'll get good, just wait... here it comes" And then by page 200 I was thinking, finally. I'm no expert, but this makes me think that the first 200 pages could've been done better so that it didn't feel like they were dragging because when things start to come together, when you start to see the connections between the people and the other-worldly elements come into place, you see that the story does have something unique to offer the reader. With that said, I would recommend the book, with the disclaimer: Give it to at least page 200, if you aren't convinced by that point as I was, then you can put it down.

Definitely a good read. Not your typical James Patterson crime bullshit. John Hart definitely knows how to create deep characters. Every single character in this book has huge personal flaws, goes through major development (aside from 1 guy who I feel was there just for the reader to hate) and the ending is not a fairy-tale ending, either. Very gritty, very down-to-earth, and very good.

This was the first book I read by Sedaris; I seriously could not read it on the bus anymore because people kept staring at me - I was laughing out loud!! He's never done anything bad, but i doubt Sedaris has ever done anything better than this!!
