Best book and movie! But the book is better. You should read the book before you see the movie. It gives you a better idea of what's going on and more detail a movie can't show you.

Ran across this book at Costco. Loved it - it is well-written and obvious that the author is very knowledgeable about Alzheimer's. I was bawling when Alice gives her speech towards the end of the book.

It's amazing the way you'll find yourself identifying with the most bizarre things. Huxley hurls us into a world so foreign and primitive that initially one can't help but chuckle at the practices we're witness to. But by immersing us in the culture so completely our affiliation with it grows to a point where, when the Europeans appear, their customs (our own for the most part) are the ones that seem ludicrous and counter to logic. You'll be surprised at how stupid and cruel money will seem after reading this book. If for no other reason check it out because of the glimpse it offers of a dying world and the revealing look at our own culture's arrogance towards practices it doesn't even try to understand.

I have to admit that I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed the 1st book in this series. Sure, I've read about dragons. But, I don't recall reading a story about someone turning into one. I had hopes that the wonderful story line could be continued you in the second installment. I felt like we got a better look at how the pride functions in this book. It seems like the powers that be tend to rule with iron fist. While most fall in line with that idea, Jacinda obviously doesn't it. But, she's really to try. She's doing it for her sisters sake, and I think a little bit for her own. Because crippling her spirit makes it easier to forget Will. It's hard for her in many ways. She's watching her sister find her place in the pride, something she's always wanted. And at the same time, she's watching her mother die inside a little everyday. It must be hard to go through all that and basically have the entire pride shun you at the same time. I'm not usually won for love triangles. But, I find this one interesting. Why? Because, I honestly don't know who to choose. I love Will because he is willing to turn his back on his family and who he was raised to be. I find that Cassian draws me a little more, but only because I can't quite figure him out. He think he will go to great lengths for Jacinda, but I often question his motives. I really loved this edition. It was better than Firelight. It makes me look forward to the 3rd books (Hidden) that much more!

Robby Jeffers abandoned a promising career as a something-or-other, ran away to Big Sur, and married his lawyer's wife, where he built a brick tower by hand and wrote tons and tons of poetry. Florid and prone to self-caricature, this stuff is all about how We Can Never Prevail Against The Forces Of Nature and, by the way, All Human Effort Is Ultimately A Waste. Still, there's a spot in my heart for Jeffers. Not too many poets out there manage to combine nihilism, fishing, and greek myth in a single work. He's just so humorless, it's like his mom read him the Oresteia Trilogy for bedtime stories.

1993 Caldecott Medal Winner The illustrator used a very beautiful, almost impressionist style of painting for this book. In late-1800's Paris, Mirette's mother takes on a boarder, Bellini, who turns out to be a great high-wire artist. Mirette endeavors to learn too, and keeps trying until she can do it, even to the point of helping Bellini overcome his new fear of the high wire. A great "if you fall down, get up again" story--very empowering for any reader. It reminded me of a Japanese proverb: "Fall down seven times, get up eight."

I like Erik Larson. It's 1933 ,Berlin, and William Dodd becomes first ambassador to Hilter's Germany. Alittle slow but an interesting read. Sometimes, it good to have a slow read rather than being on the edge of your seat. Enjoy the read - I did.
