I like this story although; the characters got on my nerves some times! I love the voice of the narrator even more than the story. Mr. Stevens acted like a mindless robot at times. He doesn't have his own mind and his whole life revolved around Lord Darlington and Darlington Hall. He is stiff and unfeeling. It was no deal to him that his father was ill and dying. No deal to him that he had to fire 2 maids. No biggie to him that the housekeeper had some feelings for him. Come on, man!! Is Stevens a man or a robot?! Evan a slave will have some feelings and their thoughts. Only at the end of the story does Mr. Stevens have and show emotions. Kind of sad though.

No one is better at integrating world building with everyday reality than Holly Black. This tale continues Kaye and Corny's foray into faerie and the choices they make have far-reaching consequences, both in the world they've discovered and in the reality they've always lived in. I love how both Kaye and Corny are basically flawed creatures, because teen-agers often are, right? They go off all hurt and want revenge, and they grow with each painful consequence. Corny is actually my favorite in this book because he is SO messed up; really and truly screwed, and he realizes it in himself. His best line, paraphrased, is something like, 'I want all things not for me' because it resonates so much with my Teen Self. I wanted EVERYTHING not for me, as Corny does, and the amazing and terrible events that transpire when he gets it pull him painfully towards a greater self acceptance. Really wonderfully written. This is the kind of teen book I aspire to write one day: uncompromising, absorbing, brilliant.

There was a little frustration in giving this rating as there was value in reading the book (humor and a genuine feeling that we witnessed Mr. Jacobs become a slightly different person) and the effort of reading the encyclopedia should afford Mr. Jacobs some, albeit subjective, kudos as a four star. However, it was a halting experience, recollections interjected with interesting factoids, but the facts were typically estranged and superficial. Likening it to a blog or Twitter tweets cut and pasted directly to print may be most comparable. Taking this blog perspective also makes it a better read. It is easy to dismiss the “one year of…” or “thirty days doing…” works as a trend or fad but they often take quite a bit of sacrifice and struggle on part of the author, however artificial the created experience, indeed provides an insight outside the ordinary and worthwhile. This seemed to consume Mr. Jacobs and rightly called a quest but better served as a recurring article, essay or maybe blog as it makes a quest of simply reading its almost 400 pages.

A really sweet and endearing retelling of Pygmalion/My Fair Lady. The characters are pretty well developed-especially for chick lit. It's a very quick read, and fun fluff.Best part? It's only three bucks for the Kindle right now. Bonus!
