I must be one of the few people who found it boring. This is one of those times when a fictionalized account of a true event should contain more fiction in order to make it more interesting. I didn't really care about the characters, except that I knew they were hungry.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I was intrigued by how the different forms of bunny goverments worked (and didn't) and thought there was a bit of political commentary and in the very least mirroring going on here, the suspense the author builds (yeah, I know, we're talking about bunnies, here), and how as a reader, I constantly had to determine how much I could trust narrators, because they're rabbits and their perceptions of the world are limited.

This was, oddly, a real page-turner for me. I can't figure out why, exactly, as I never was a Little House on the Prairie fan, don't devour historicals, have no time for those PBS shows that have people live in huts and cook over fires. But this book was compelling because of Mattie, the protagonist, and you wanted her to DO things. When she finally DID one of the things you wanted her to, it doesn't end up the way you'd hoped. It's one of those non-happily-ever-after endings, and I guess it's probably more of a realistic way to conclude her story, but I have to be honest and say I don't see how Mattie could have got past certain things to live out her days with her husband. I'd have taken a massive frying pan and smashed his skull in. Now THAT'S a happily ever after I can stand behind.
