I appreciate Amis after reading Hitchens' memoir, Hitch-22. I Should probably read London Fields.

Mr. Jarvis brings a rich background to wrap into the Google picture and has included well chosen quotes from appropriate sources. It is interesting to see how one company, with an open perspective, has changed so much. A "goodread" that slows a bit at the end.

I pulled out my old hardcover of Passage to Dawn and read it again recently. I was pleasantly pleased at how much I enjoyed it (and how quickly time seemed to melt away as I read it). Being back on the Sea Sprite was like being slipping into my favorite pair of running shoes and setting out one the trail. Salvatore is a master at pulling the reader into the adventure. I felt the excitement of Drizzt and Catti-brie fighting side-by-side without some of the emotional and physical baggage of more recent annuals. I jeered Errtu in his infatuation with causing pain to the drow hero and his friends. I laughed at the antics of Harkle Hapell, Ivan, and the doo-dad Pikel. And, I smiled at seeing other old friends such as Danica, Cadderly, Stumpet, Bruenor, Regis, Wulfgar, and, of course, Guenhwyvar. Of all the books in the series, this one always felt like a class reunion more than a new adventure. However, like any class reunion, it's hard to walk away without renewing old friendships, reminiscing on past adventures, and marveling at how far you've come since the old days. Salvatore has definitely come far.

I'm trying hard to evaluate this story on its own merits, cuz seriously it's very similar to some other books by Jane Austen but with less plot. My favorite part of this book is the very beginning with John and Fanny Dashwood (they're not even main characters). It's like 20 pages of a systematic, repetitive, bland discussion about money but it's still a gem to me because it highlights the way people can rationalize themselves into justifying pretty much anything that will benefit them personally. It's kind of a metephor for the rest of the book; really, really boring but with a point. I'd like to think this writting is Austen's way of calling the Dashwoods and the Willoughbys of the world out on that kind of behavior, but she seems much more forgiving of human nature then I am. The story is about Elinor Dashwood and her family. Her dad just died and her deadbeat half-brother won't support his family like he promised. So Elinor, her mom and her sisters move into a really small house and kind of live off of the charity of their extended family. A lot of this story centers around realtively normal social interactions of this extended family and their friends. Traveling, going to parties, eating together, gossiping and stuff like that. There is a little bit of intrigue, but hy virtue of the POV and narriative type, it is underplayed. (The author deals empatheticly even with the would-be villian...even though I think what he did was pretty bad). I liked that Elinor is not just an intellectual "thinker" or empathetic "feeler", she's a stratigist, even when things look bleak she's always and planning and trying to make things better for her family. This book also suprised me because most of the time in Austen's stories people repress their feelings and in this one people get real mad and yell at each other. (It was also a bit more interesting on the romance side, because of how Elinor and her sister react differently to the matters of the heart.) If you like situational drama with light romance, you might like this story. Or you might think it's really boring, it just depends on if you like Austen's style of writing.

Some people really love this book. I didn't LOVE it but I didn't stop reading it (which I have no qualms about if I don't like a book). I wasn't sad when I was finished with it. An interesting concept and it at points conjures up beautiful moments and is woven well. It is supposed to be made into a movie and I think it could actually be better in film...sorry if that's blasphemy.
Follow the maladjusted detective, Harry Hole, possibly at the end of his career, through the streets of Oslo in this search for a serial killer. I thoroughly enjoyed this, the depth of Harry's character was intriguing, and the comparison with his adversarial colleague Tom Waaler strings the reader along throughout. As a frequent business visitor to Oslo, I could literally feel the bitter cold of this city as I read, even through the English translation from the original Norwegian. Very much looking forward to the sequel, The Redbreast.

It's silly to tell a story about a child who learns to love books and the library through a rather boring, ugly library book. You're better off finding a really cool, beautiful, exciting library book and let your kid learn to love the library firsthand.

It's hard to decide where to start with this book. It was recommended to me by my favorite aunt who's not really related to me :) and I enjoyed it...but. I think it's like reading a newsletter or blog dedicated to a person's hometown. If you aren't from there, you might find it interesting at times but you don't really get it. That's kind of how I felt with this book. I didn't go to a small college or stay in a dorm and get a close knit group of girlfriends. If that was more your life, especially if you went to one of the Seven Sisters Colleges, I think you will enjoy this book a lot more. full review here

Clearly, I have thing with food writing, so my reviews on such topics might be biased. This one, though, should appeal to techie and history buffs, as well as foodies. Jello molded into banana peels to construct a big pea pod? Yes, people really once thought that was haute cuisine.

Janet Evanovich has become one of my favorite writers. Her books are light and funny and 95% of the time I can't put them down. This was no exception. I liked that it moved quickly, didn't spend to much time on details and truely made me laugh out loud. So glad one of my co-works recommended her books to me!
