I just finished Alice LaPlante's debut novel, "Turn of Mind," and I thought it was fantastic. It's the story of a doctor who is succumbing to Alzheimer's, losing more of her life/memory every day, in the midst of a murder investigation in which she is a suspect. The really interesting part is that the entire book is told from the doctor's perspective, which gives a whole new spin on the concept of an unreliable narrator. It's a fast, tight read and you won't want to put it down. Really excellent.

Stephen Donaldson's "Gap" series is one my favorite series. My father handed me the first one, saying, "This is full of violence and rape and you'll probably hate all the characters in this first book, but the story just keeps getting better." He was right. The story begins with a space pirate attack on a police ship and the "rescue" of the last survivor on the police ship and concludes with the human race fighting the Amnion, an alien species capable of extreme genetic manipulation. Despite the ever-increasing complexity of the plot (which starts with a three main characters and ends with inter-galactic political intrigue) the characterization is what really makes these stories worth reading. It is a masterful study of hero and anti-hero.

A sweet book about accepting your family for who they are, similar to "Marsupial Sue" by John Lithgow (without the catchy lyrics and soundtrack.) This one is about a young female mynah bird who wishes her family weren't so noisy.

I learned everything I know about Granite from this book. Since I don't know much, I guess that wasn't hard. Wessels makes it interesting and the opening chapter is about a short mountain in Vermont that I've hiked. Since I'm from the midwest, knowing a mountain like that doesn't come along very often in my life. Yup, once again, Wessels does a great job making information accessible to layfolk. I guess he's sort of reminiscent of John McPhee.
