In the Tipping Point, Gladwell describes how trends get started, how ideas take off, how crime rates changes, etc. He describes how and why an idea goes from being relatively unknown to taking off and being popular, what makes the idea stick, and more. An important aspect is how a few types of people can help an idea take off, including Connectors (people who have the gift of knowing a lot of people and making connections), Mavens (people who know a lot about many different areas and like to share their knowledge with others) and Salesman (people who are good at convincing others about something). I thought it was an interesting book and it made me look at trends differently and what's behind these trends.

Corinne recommended me this book and I really enjoyed the suspense of the entire novel. It did start out slow, but it moved rather quickly after that and though predictable at times there were many more twists than predicts.

The author behind the work makes the novel even more nebulous and tragically unfinished. A Jewish woman of Polish descent who perishes in Auschwitz, Némirovsky fails to mention Jewish identities or persecution in her novel and other works written during the same period. What's more, she often wrote for the extreme right and professed a Catholic identity. Despite these seeming contradictions, themes of isolation, injustice, and persecution proliferate her novel. Suite Française is a beautifully written, enigmatically challenging read. Though the copy provides an appendix that details Irène's future plans for the novel, one is still left somewhat overcome by the tragedy of the author's untimely death and by her unfinished masterpiece. My next endeavor: to read the book in French.

The language is fantastic, although the speeches get a bit tedious. It gave me a great insight into black culture in the early 20th century, and a really interesting picture of Harlem. Overall, I was really impressed with Ellison's writing.

I put off writing a review for this book for a looooong time because this book is so intensely meaningful for me. Not exaggerating at all, here: this book completely revolutionized my expectations for literature. This book, along with Camus' The Stranger, is responsible for my adult literary awakening. Atwood's writing style is unique, and I imagine there might be people out there who don't like it, but I LOVE IT! Her style is somehow dry, complex, blunt, and intense, all at the same time. She uses repetition in such interesting ways, like a composer, with slight variations to really emphasize ideas.

This was (and probably still is) my favorite in the series thus far. The way it attacks your mind with the past, essential background information on characters and introduces this new element of Harry's parent's deaths is just remarkable. I still get a kick out of it each time I read it.

Blah! This book was slow going from the start and had nothing to grab my attention enough to get me past the first quarter. I couldn't even finish it. Boring!
