An interesting story, that lacks some interest for kids, as it focuses a bit too much on the adults in the story, and their reaction to events. When six-year-old Ben is on his own the story gets much more gripping.

Anyone who's read my reviews of the first and last books in the Twilight saga knows that this review won't consist of much. Twilight was the beginning, the best book, the start of something great. Or at least, it should have been. Breaking Dawn was the bitterly disappointing ending to the saga that had potential, but just didn't deliver. New Moon and Eclipse were the pointless, disappointing, utterly forgettable filler books in this tragedy sandwich. You know it's sad when, three days after I read this book, I couldn't immediately remember what it was about. I still don't remember much of what happened in it, aside from the fight scene towards the end. The only reason I remember said fight scene is because I'm still infuriated that Bella was able to act like such a spoiled, selfish little brat and somehow have fate reward her for it. When Edward and his family are preparing for battle, Bella has an emotional breakdown and decides she just can't live without Edward. So she asks him to stay out of the fight. For her. Internally, she feels terrible for requesting it, but she can't reconcile those feelings with the overwhelming fear of losing Edward. So she never takes it back. Edward, like the totally pussy-whipped doormat he's become (completely uncharacteristic of him considering his behavior in the first and second books), agrees. The explanation is that he feels so badly about leaving Bella for eight months (in the second book) that he can't refuse her anything. Even if it means leaving his family to fight, alone, against a sadistic, revenge-bent she-vamp whose only target is Edward's own precious little girlfriend. So he does just that. He leaves the werewolves and his family to fight alone while he and Bella camp out in the mountains. But wait! It's okay because the she-vamp has other plans. While she sends her army of newborn vamps to fight the Cullens (the ones who didn't allow some selfish bitch to talk them out of fighting, anyway) and the werewolves, *she* loops around to the mountains with her freshly-made lover-vamp to take Bella out while the others are preoccupied. It's a real good thing she asked Edward to stay out of the fight, otherwise he wouldn't have been on that mountain to defend her from Bonnie and Clyde Vampire. Please. Don't even get me started on Bella's other admirable traits. As the series progresses, she gets dumber, more selfish, and less empathetic. I hate this character. She's not the same character as the Bella in Twilight. Not even close. Her attitude and behavior make this book barely tolerable.

Almost entirely free of content, this book is mostly a list of speculative, rambling questions with never any sort of answer. In other words, there are lots of mysteries, but no secrets. A couple of quick paraphrases will summarize 90% of the text. A and B both lived in the south of France in the 12th century. Therefore, it is almost certain that they met and shared all their secrets. So and so went to Egypt. Is it possible that while there he learned all of Eqypt's ancient mysteries? Many times I had to re-read a paragraph to try and discover how a discussion of one thing became a conclusion or speculation about something else. There would never be a connection, just a giant preposterous leap. The authors try to mine the premise that the Templars are just one link in a chain of guardians and list other links as being almost everyone throughout history who is famous, Alexander the great, Charlemagne, etc. Much cherry-picking goes on to support this view: Alexander's great successes are mentioned, his early death and immediate reversals are not. There are genuine mysteries in the world, like the Oak Island "money pit", yet this book adds nothing to the discussion. Too bad. I usually enjoy books like this one; perhaps I have read too many of them.

I got to this book from Jon Krakauer's amazing Under the Banner of Heaven because I needed to know more about the history of the Mormon Church and Smith himself. Brodie was a well-regarded academic historian and, I gather, an ex-Mormon by the time she wrote this. First and foremost, this is a great story, whether you think Smith is a complete and utter fraud or a prophet, or something in between. Brodie is a skeptic and pulls no punches, which I like, but I found the book weakest where the most important questions arise: how does somebody convince others and then himself that he's a prophet of God, and of the literally unbelievable tale he spun about the plates, the stones, and all the rest? Brodie's various hypotheses (e.g. Smith, perhaps unknowingly, had hypnotic powers) aren't persuasive. Still, this is a strong book on a great topic, almost a page turner, and it's led me to want to know more. So now I'm reading a much more favorable Smith bio, Bushman's Rough Stone Rolling. The comparison is interesting--for example, Brodie makes much of Smith's early work digging for ancient treasure on farms in New York; Bushman pushes this aside.

The rare novella-length slog. Borges' enthusiasm for this book is unpardonable.

I loved the premise of the book. I was a little lost with the political protocols.
