Fun, soapy story about two girls from small town Ohio who go to New York City in 1929. One wants to become a famous nightclub singer, the other wants to meet her father, who left her when she was just a baby. The girls fight for no reason and go their separate ways, and get caught up in scandals and bootlegging, start dating rich young men, and generally have a good time. I liked this one for its setting and the soap opera-ness of the romantic entanglements, but it's not as fun as Vixen, also set in the flapper era.

I read this book because I'm fascinated and intrigued by all things Marie Antoinette! There are three books in this trilogy: this one, "Days of Splendor, Days of Sorrow" and "Confessions of Marie Antoinette." All three of the books have the same pluses and minuses. Incredibly well-researched, there are quite a few times in the books when I learned things that I've never read or heard of before - surprising after as many books as I've read...and even multiple visits to Chateau Versailles! The author's knowledge of the subject has the distinct advantage of 'putting you right there' and her descriptions of people and surroundings are detailed and sharp, allowing the reader to truly 'see' what is being described. The books are written in the first person, by Marie Antoinette...except for occasional instances when - out of nowhere - they point of view is switched to another person. I found the times this happened to be confusing and poorly inserted into the narratives. I realize, of course, that in telling the story there needed to be information given to the reader which Marie Antoinette was not privy to. However, I felt it was extremely clumsily handled and spoiled what might have been surprisingly good historical fiction (not a genre of which I'm particularly overly fond). I recommend the entire trilogy to anybody who is interested in learning the "true" story of what happened to the famous, ill-fated Queen of France. The research and details of her life make up for what is lacking in cohesive writing style. They are quick easy reads, and I found myself finished with the trilogy much sooner than I expected to be.

I learned that the plot summary "Jesuits in space" is not as stupid as it sounds.

Derring-do in very early Bolshevik Russia. A great yarn packed with vignettes of vanished worlds and character portraits –I just about fell in love with the book's style. They don't write 'em like that anymore!

It's art masquerading as trash masquerading as biography.

I'd give this 2.5 stars. Something about this story bothered me but I can't quite figure out what. Maybe it's that I hadn't read the first book. This one could stand alone, but there's a lot of focus on M and I just didn't feel like her character was developed enough here. It was often hard to understand why she reacted the way she did and maybe reading the first story, which focused on her, would have clarified things. The third friend, Nicki, is pretty much a shell character here though the ending makes clear her story is coming in the next book. Three best friends are devastated when M discovers that her family is moving. The three come up with a plan for M to move in with Ariel and her family to finish the school year and delay their pain. This seems like a great plan but ends up causing problems in their relationship. On the plus side, I can't wait to make some of the recipes!

Parsi author Rohinton Mistry can be seen as twice-removed from his origins. The Parsis as a community have mingled with India and yet remained largely unchanged. When a Parsi moves to Canada and writes of displacement, this is someone worth listening to! He knows what he's saying, as a representative of a community and as an individual. The stories, of the inhabitants of a decaying, tenacious, mildewed Parsi building in the heart of Bombay, absorbed and moved me. My all-time favourite is 'Condolence Visit'. Anyone who has ever grieved over the loss of a loved one would love this story.
