Marilyn Johnson (library lover) tells the story of one of our valuable community institutions – the library – and the people who staff it. She describes the traditional library and its evolution into this century, where much of library work is carried on outside of the physical library building (stretching into the ether to meet patrons online and help meet their information needs). Libraries have changed a lot over the years, but librarians remain an important resource in connecting people with information, guiding and educating folks along the way. She also describes the other kinds of work librarians/information scientists do in other kinds of libraries and venues. Johnson knows her stuff, and this book has the potential to open readers’ eyes to all of the services libraries and librarians have to offer – if only they’d stop by their local libraries and check it out. *sigh* Libraries are important. And, one more time for posterity – libraries are important! Librarians will be delighted to have been singled out after reading this, and most will be impressed with Johnson’s research into libraries and librarianship. She even name-drops like a pro, mentioning Sandy Berman, Jessamyn West, Michael Stephens, and more. Delightful!

This is a journalistic view of the greatest tragedy for immigrants in the United States: the largest number of immigrants to die at once in a horribly failed attempt to transport way too many people in the back of a semi truck. It is heartbreaking and angering. The book was written before the story fully played out in the news, though, so you will have to Google some names when you are done to see where they are now. I don't necessarily agree that the driver should have been prosecuted the strongest though, even though he fled the scene. There were others who made a lot of money off exploiting the desparate, and just because they weren't there that day doesn't mean they ultimately shouldn't carry the highest blame. I read this all in the bookstore, so it's a quick one.

This anthology of short stories sets out to answer the burning question of the ages: what are more awesome, zombies or unicorns? Justine Larbalestier (author of Liar, amongst many other things) is the editor that heads up Team Zombie; Holly Black (author of many, many books that I haven't read) leads Team Unicorn. Each editor has stories by six authors with which to make her case. I fully admit that I was pro-zombie before I came to this book. How couldn't I be? Zombies embody our deepest fears. I was open to being persuaded otherwise (killer unicorns, what's not to love?), so dove in. Unfortunately, I was not persuaded. The stronger set of stories belonged to the flag-carriers for the undead. Particular standouts: Scott Westerfeld's "Inoculata" and Libba Bray's "Prom Night". Carrie Ryan's "Bougainvillea" is recommended to those who like The Forest of Hands and Teeth series but get fed up with the love stories. I was really looking forward to Margo Flanagan's story -- I have loved her work since first being sucked in by "Singing My Sister Down", the story that led me to seek out all her books. So I was probably most disappointed by this one; it was an interesting idea but just didn't pull together for me. This is a quick, amusing read. The editors spar in comment sections before each piece. And who could fail to be entertained by the endpapers? I only wish that there had been a story about zombie unicorns.

I finished this book so long ago that I can't think of what to write. In general, I love Tom Robbins, though he was a lot easier to follow when I could sit and read and not be interrupted two thousand times by kids.
