I missed this book the first time around because I was 10 when it was published and I was a bit precocious and never one to read at my grade level. I wish I hadn’t missed it! I’m a big Lemony Snicket fan, and it’s easy to see that he’s been influenced by Dahl. This is a little dark and violent, but quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, I enjoyed it more *before* Matilda develops her magical powers, when she was just a really smart child - though Miss Honey’s explanation at the end mitigates some of that. I’m looking forward to reading some more of Dahl’s works.

The third part of the Chris Stewart triology of his life in Spain. Love his travel books on Spain - a lovely personal account of his life there. Back Cover Blurb: The Almond Blossom Appreciation Society finds Chris and his family still living on their farm, El Valero - but life there never stands still. You will find yourself laughing out loud as Chris is instructed by his daughter on local teenage mores; bluffs his way as an art history guide to millionaire Bostonians; is rescued off a snowy peak by the Guardia Civil; and joins an Almond Blossom Appreciation Society. You'll cringe as he tries his hand at office work in an immigrants' advice centre in Granada. And you'll never see olive oil in quite the same way again.....

Upon rereading this book, I have a much different reaction to it. Maybe it’s because I don’t read tell-all biographies, so I’m already not a fan of the style, but the narration came off as being catty when I think the author was going for witty. My main problem is with some of the plot “twists”—if only because there’s a twist at the end of the last twenty chapters. At that point, it stops being surprising and more plodding. (And some of the twists you could probably guess from the beginning of the book.) Also, the Springsteen references don’t contribute to the plot, and come off as more of a gimmick (“Cover Me” inspires a glove craze? Seriously?) and there’s too many pop culture references that come off as overbearing instead of witty.

So far, so good. I love her unapologetic look at female power. Very Dynasty for the new milennium. All the romp scenes are pretty funny too.

A decent read. Some of it wasn't really very realistic, but it wasn't too bad. My first Ken Follett book -- I have another on my list - hopefully it's better.

3.25 Stars. Gosh, another hard one to review. If you read the synopsis of the book it is somewhat misleading, it leads the reader to expect most of the book to be about the relationship between Harper and Maggie (the girl from the train wreck) but it's really not. The book lends most of its time to Harper's relationship with the love of his life, Betsy. Many times I sighed that "Here we go again" noise when reading this. It's stated in the book that Harper was living in the shadows of his deceased wife (not giving anything away here) and the book certainly illustrates this--so much in fact, I almost abandoned it. Had I expected this I might be a little less critical. Although I found myself frequently frustrated I also found the story calling me back which may be attributed to the writing. There are also many other issues that lie beneath the surface of this story--some subtle, some not so subtle--which could illicit some excellent discussion: racism, forgiveness, the draft, hate, et al. Eventually it all works out into a tale of redemption, forgiveness, and understanding.

I loved Drina's world as a little girl. She showed me around London before I had ever been there for myself! Definitely one to give to the nieces, should they decide to become ballerinas. The entire series is worth paying a visit.
