Nominally a novel, but actually more like a collection of short stories, In a Free State by V. S. Naipaul is thus a little difficult to review. Should I focus on the novella, from which the book gets its title, or should I deal equally with all five narratives, and attempt to draw out the shared themes that give the book its coherence? This story was too simplistic and was written in very flippant style. There is not a strong story line, and what there is kind of unbelievable in a sappy, fairytale-like way.

This book should be mandatory reading for all Americans.

SO original and very creepy/sad. The photographs were the fun surprise and I loved reading that they come from collections. As usual, when I first began to read this I felt embarrassed for reading another "teen" book but this is for adults as well. Some of it spoke to the teen but I loved it. What a ride.

stream of conscious novel that was too introspective and random for my liking - which is what it was meant to be like, but I prefer a plot with more than one character who is so far up his own rear end he disappears

4.5 stars I’m very happy for reading this book! It’s the first one in the Underworld Detection Agency series and it’s a very promising start! “Under Wraps” by Hannah Jayne has it all: magic, vampires, werewolves, zombies, trolls, fairies and humans! The story is about Sophie Lawson, a human immune to magic who works in the Underworld Detection Agency. She finds herself working with a mysterious detective, trying to solve some murders and find her missing boss. Sophie has some help from her roommate, a vampire with great taste in fashion! Sophie is a very good woman. She lost her mother when she was a baby and she never met her father. She was raised by her grandmother, a great seer, but she’s dead too now. She hasn’t an easy life as a kid because the other kids in school didn’t understand her. She works for UDA, because there she feels normal. She’s an “ordinary” woman in this world but she’s very brave. Also, she is very funny and there were many scenes in the book that I was laughing very much. Parker Hayes is a very good character and very mysterious also. He’s trying to solve some murders but his has an agenda of his own. From the first moment he meets Sophie there was chemistry between them. His very protective with her and, although, she doesn’t trust him fully, they work fine together. But what I like more in the book are the secondary characters!!!! Nina, Mr. Sampson, Vlad and Steve are all awesome!! I’m looking forward for the next book of the series because the end was a major cliffhanger!! A new great urban fantasy series is here ladies and gentlemen!
